FWIW, IME/IMHO (are those enough abbreviations for you?), the IP310 (or any of the IP cabs) works extremely well FOR ME on the gig. They sound just as good in a mix as they do 'in the basement.' Cheezewiz can back me up on that one.

Well, again, I can't imagine two people having more different touch, technique, tone requirements etc. that you and I... and also a different playing context... with you in a 3-5 piece rock oriented band, and me typically playing 8-12 piece funk gigs with horns and multiple back-up singers, or small jazz trio type gigs.... so even 'sounding good in the mix' can be very relative.
I don't even think we are disagreeing that much. Quite a few of us are saying the IP's sound great, but are just too heavy and have other 'form factor' issues that would keep us (or me anyway) from ever considering them. That in no way means they can't work wonderfully for others.

I'm sure it sounds great on the gig, my question is more about if I would notice that much of a difference. Basically I would balance out the pros/cons. Does it sound so much better than my Epi on the gig that I wouldn't mind hauling it night after night? I really don't know the answer.

Yeah, but even if you throw out the subjective part and for the sake of conversation say it's universally accepted as better, IMHO, we're talkin' greater vs great, not great vs crappy. That's what I was kinda' gettin' at. There's so many great choices at the high end, that even if you think (as I do) the IP310 is the best you've heard, the AMOUNT that it's better is still not so great you'd wanna' throw everything else out and move to it. i can't imagine switching from Epi to IP series and having either my bandmates, a soundguy, or an audience member actually noticing a difference. if they did, i'd say "thanks! can you help me get it down the stairs?"

Having heard all the above cabs, I can absolutely testify they all sound great and its a matter of personal preference. For ME, if I could afford an IP310, I'd have one, and use it. No ifs, ands or buts. Over pretty much any other gear I've heard. Will the audience notice my "stellar" tone? Probably not, unless they are other bass players. Would I sound, to my own ears, better than ever? You betchya. In the end, it really is personal preference, and although Tom and I don't agree on every single piece of gear, our tastes are pretty darned similar. I was pretty darned impressed with Ken's Thunderfunk/Epifani set up too, and I'd certainly love to have one of those too!
As an aside, I'm weight conscious about my gear too. I have a bad back that has given me problems since a basketball "accident" about 12 years ago. I will probably never use an SVT or an Ampeg 810, however, I'm not opposed at all to using relatively heavy gear if it sounds great...for example..the Mesa 400+ and Bergie NV610, both of which I've owned. I'd love to own an Aggie DB750. I'd LOVE to own a Berg IP. To me, these are fairly heavy, but also not unreasonably heavy (like a 165 lb cabinet)

Hey! I used to play through a Mark IV (400W @ 2ohms) head and TWO 18" cabs... one (bottom) being a folded horn design! Talk about LOW! I was playing a black Ric 4001 thru it. I was tired of being buried in the mix!Modern Growl said:I'll go with an All Peavey rig! Mmmmm....
