112+210 vs. 112+112

Unfortunately i do not have an opportunity to hear these 2 options side by side...

Wondering if anyone had, and what are his thoughts.

Two mobile ministack options im looking at:

2 X 112's
OR
1 X 210 + 1 x 112.


Already using Aggy GS112, so the direction is either getting the GS210 used, or adding another GS112(OR an SL112 and then be super mobile weight wise in certain situations where there's a need to be even lighter).


Another thought is to add a Berg instead of a second Aggy for the 210 or the second 112 in order to achieve a bit more focus that i lack now with the GS112...
Any thoughts on that?


I do lean towards a 210 for some reason, but again, never had a chance to compare the 2 options above. Would appreciate any words of wisdom..

There is a ton of research that says mixing driver sizes will lead to unpredictable results.

The rule of thumb around here is generally try to use matching cabs.

Also-

For years, when touring big stages, i used 8X10+1x15 and sometimes 1X18 and i certainly did not invent the concept of mixing driver sizes... So this should not worry me on a conceptual level, only on WHICH drivers/cabs to mix, and thats the purpose of this tread indeed.

As far as it being unpredictable, well, thats the reason for the OP, to see if anyone has some experience to share in order to eliminate some of the mystery

I suggest that it may not be necessary to have heard any of these particular options in order to have an informed opinion about your approach. The whole concept of mixing cabs and speakers together to achieve a special sound, like a gourmet chef blending spices to obtain a special flavor, seems to be a holdover of some sort from the guitar world - in which cab design and construction is of minimal importance, relative to the quality of the speakers.

Not so in the bass world, where cabs, speakers, filters and crossovers are typically designed and engineered as an integrated system to a much higher standard, as is necessary due to the greater demands involved in reproducing low frequencies - cleanly and clearly. Generally speaking, any time you mix cabs of different sizes, types, structures, specifications, brands, etc., you're essentially shooting in the dark as it regards performance. Because you're introducing the complexity of a bunch of differing factors that can interact unpredictably.

Best-case scenario is that the cab combination sounds great, though you may still have to hit a compromise point in the cabs' EQ, rather than to EQ for a single type cab. Worst-case scenario is that you introduce phase cancellations, standing waves, hot spots and/or dead spots, and similar anomalies into the mix - thereby achieving a whole that is less than the sum of its parts.

There are seldom many good reasons to mix cab types, and always many good reasons to not do so.

Considering i am using the cabinets/drivers from the same manufacture/line (Aggy GS in this case), Were they not designed to interact?

Case in point: I feel that my GS112 is not focused enough but has a sweet warm low end, are the 210's, from that same series model, not going to give me the most natural answer to solving this, by introducing the more mid focused behavior of the 10's?

I have with Avatar.
The 2 112's sounded so much better to my ears.
Using a 2x10 on top of a 112 sounded a little off to me.
Just my opinion/experience

I used a Bergantino AE112 and AE210 and they sounded fine.

My Aguilar rig was 2 GS112 cabs, so I don't have experience with your cabs.

Did you feel the 2 X GS112's sounded more true and "aligned" then your other 210+112 rig?

Hi, I used the GS112 cabs with a Thunderfunk 550. I put a lot of emphasis on the low end with the Timbre control so I didn't really notice a "scooped" problem.

I preferred the Berg rig. There was a ton of bass but it was a tighter clearer sound, more definition in the notes, which I like. I listened to it from out front a few times and it always sounded fine to me.

I'm not sure where the differences lie.

I don't think Aguilar and Bergs would mix very well, but IMO I'd either get a Berg rig or a full DB or SL rig.

OK-
I brought in a GS210 to go with my GS112. Its what i was looking for. They compliment exactly how i hoped they would. the 2x10's bring the mid growl and the 1x12 adds the nice round bottom end. Glad i did this.

Only problem is that they dont align size wise unless i put the 210 vertical. Not sure they were meant to project sound in such a way..

I have and used for years an Avatar 2x10 Neo with an Avatar CB 1x12. Ive used this set up on many gigs as its my mobile rig, I pair it with my MB SD800 and have plenty of volume at shows and rehearsals. The best part though is it sounds fantastic. Plenty of positive comments from those that have played through my rig as well.

Havent tried the 2 1x12 stack though.

The 210 is 18.5" tall and the 112 is 19" wide. They cound have matched perfectly.... why couldn't Aguilar add 0.5" to the 210 cab hight or shave off 0.5" of the 112 width.... what a shame...;(
