12" Speaker Recommendation

Which Speaker Would You recommend?

Last time I played a rumble, it wasn't the 75w model you have. It was not a flat response sound. It was on the boomy side. That's with a stock 15" speaker it had.
You can see specs of a speaker at the manufacturers website. However it's a bit complex as no one spec will mean much alone especially without the cabinet specs, interior volume and port sizing (if ported)
If you can get that turbosound 12" cheaply it will work. Any speaker in your rumble will have a different sound. It will sound like a bass amp. Nothing random will be perfect. The original speaker will not be perfect. It will be like a preset eq. You can use the amps eq to flavour it just like you would if it was the stock speaker.

If you want a perfect sound (I.e your personal preference) then it is unlikely to be achieved with random selection.

@Al Kraft well, offered but also as they said, in the USA. Shipping will cost probably as much as the speaker if not more.

As far as specs go, I don't see what the issue is..
I know speakers are designed for X cubic feet, and ported or not, etc... But in general, I'm sure there's a basic set of specs to look at like frequency response range... Not low enough, too high, etc...

Rest of the specs made sense... Don't want the RMS wattage lower than the cabs max wattage. Designed for 8ohm so stick with 8ohm. Hole is 12", so grabbing a 12".

If I know a few specs to keep an eye open for, I can have more luck finding something used that might work. If I know from the basic specs it's not going to work then I don't have to waste the time searching the make/model for more specs like enclosure details.
You have completely mis-understood what everyone has been telling you.

Were you aware that the rated power handling may not apply (or even come close) for bass applications? It's not unusual top have to DE-RATE a driver's published power handling specs by 50%, which is why the other specs are so important.

Otherwise, just buy what the manufacturer intended to be used in the cabinet and be done with it.

Specs are tricky to find at times... I contacted Fender about the speaker asking for specs and the tech replied that they nor the manual contains detailed specs about the speaker and couldn't recommend a replacement.

I found a $40 new (discontinued) speaker, a Pyramid WH12. Went to the site, no info about enclosures or freq response, and in the Q&A the only question was asking about the freq response and the answer from the manufacturer was that they don't have that information.

I know from numerous posts that the Eminence is a good upgrade with improved sound, but again, between jobs and just want a cheap solution to learn with for now. I'm just hoping to avoid putting in a speaker that doesn't have the lower range needed for a bass, or underpowered and will blow.

Actually, specs are impossible to find for most OEM drivers, no manufacturer that I know of gives them out since a fair amount of R&D costs were invested in developing an OEM driver for their needs. This is why I suggested buying the exact replacement part from Fender (authorized service center). I did not suggest anything else, nor did anybody else (except for the tongue in cheek suggestion).

At this point I would say your best bet is to do a search on "Fender Rumble 75 speaker", see who has done some experimenting, and see what their results were. I tend to be an OEM replacement person and recognize that option may not be there for you for whatever reason. Lacking a good/affordable OEM solution, I would seek advice from one of the manufacturers whose products you can buy economically.

Well, as mentioned, Fender doesn't sell a replacement and searching in Ontario no one has a used one either. As for not suggesting anything else... Sure it was. Someone even posted a link about upgrading the Rumble 100 with a different speaker, and you suggested I buy a speaker from you that was from something similar but different. :D

Yes, I have a suitable speaker. In fact the reason I know it’s suitable is because I used to work for Fender. It’s just not practical to ship for a reasonable cost.

Go stick whatever “hole filler” you want in the hole and make some noise. Nobody’s going to get hurt.

Ya, like I mentioned, most people who posted about upgrades seem to have used the same Eminence speaker as I was looking at, which is why I picked it. I tried reaching out to them by sending private messages to ask if still happy with the upgrade, but none responded.

Fender, was useless... No specs, no recommendations, no replacements.

Being in Canada hinders things a bit. When I was on eBay I saw a direct replacement for $25CAD, but shipping was about $50 plus said to expect duty, so about $100 total for a $25 speaker.

Been looking as cheaper brands which is why I was asking for help with for specs... Pyramid WH12 for example looked promising but, so little detailed info, and even the manufacturer didn't know the freq response. Probably bought a bunch from China and slapped a label on it and just the middle man.

Sometimes cheap isn't bad. I buy pickups for guitar upgrades and some of those $15 Fleor pickups are about as good as $100 name brands.

EDIT - Hhaha... I messaged a guy on Facebook with dozens of used speakers for sale. I asked if he had any 12" 8ohm speakers for a bass amp... he said possibly... what freq response am I looking for.

If you go to the Eminence website you will find full spec sheets for those speakers that people felt worked well. Then you could compare those specs to whatever brand of speaker you find offered for sale that you feel is affordable. It would be beyond my skill and experience to evaluate/predict the level of impact when there were variations between the specs, but perhaps you'll be luckier than I would be. In my experience all the specs matter and how they all come together in the right balance/trade-off is where experience and an aspect of art of the practice is essential. I.e. even for experienced engineers there are aspects that are more "feel for the combinations and trades" than exact hard and fast rules...with some exceptions obviously.

I think you over thinking this.
The frequency response is dependent on the cabinet as well as the speaker. Most, nearly all 12" speakers will have a fr spec something like tens of Hz (eg 50Hz) to a few kHz (eg 5kHz) all give or take a bit.

Both the turbosound and pyramid will work with the amp. My pick would be the turbosound of those 2.

Don't put too much trust in what forums say about vast improvement by changing stock speakers to some other random type. It will be different, not necessarily better to you.

Facebook guy got back to me... no prices though just models to look at. Gonna Google these and see if anything jumps out... shame no Eminence model #s

20x RCF L12L750 12”
2x Eminence 12” - not sure of model
4x Mospeak P1225W 12” 8ohm
7x EV 81230740235M 12”
5x EV force 12”
1x EV DL12ST 12”
3x EV proline 12”

Well, I know specs can be inaccurate especially on the cheap stuff but, new $40 and sorta local for pickup...one site has it for $28 but not sure about shipping.

Pyramid WH12
  • Excellent replacement woofer for sound & music reinforcement systems
  • Cloth edge suspension
  • 25 oz. magnet
  • 1.5-inch Kapton Bobbin voice coil
  • 8 Ohms impedance
  • Mounting depth: 4.5 inches
  • 35hz - 5Khz
  • 250 Watts RMS/500 Watts peak power

Get the pyramid. It will work fine.

Agedhorse: I've made speakers (amateur) for close to 40 years. I still learn more all the time, especially from folks willing to share their knowledge. From you I have also learned patience and resilience in forums. This is not a knock on op. It is a genuine thank you for providing more info than initially requested by many a forum user. You know there are lots of amateur engineers who silently appreciate and gain the knowledge.

Most, nearly all 12" speakers will have a fr spec something like tens of Hz (eg 50Hz) to a few kHz (eg 5kHz) all give or take a bit.

That's what I was mainly after... 50hz - 5000hz (or 5khz). Basic range. That Pyramid/Pyle speaker (claims) 35hz - 5000hz, so even if off a bit, should still be in that zone.

I appreciate the help people gave, but honestly, I'm an absolute amateur. I understand a few basics. Some of the stuff is over my head, or just info I couldn't find on many 'cheap' options. Plus, if everyone's taste is different anyways, getting too deep into the specs probably doesn't matter much anyways.

As long as I match Ohms, have enough wattage that it doesn't blow as soon as I turn the volume past 1, and it's within the typical frequency range of a bass speaker, I think it'll be fine.

Again... I've never heard this thing work, so, no idea if the speaker will sound better or worse than stock.
