In general, respect is reserved for those that have earned it.

I don't believe this should be true...I live by the premise that respect initially should be given to all other individuals. Respect should not have to be earned, trust is earned...respect can however, be lost.

So, when I meet a new person they immediately have my respect and I may eventually gain trust in them. Alternately, if their behavior warrants, they could lose respect and any chance of being trusted.

I can remember the buzz of excitement I felt when my parents would take me to Chuck Levin's or Veneman's Music when I was little.

I was 22 when I first went into Veneman's and Chuck Levin's, and I remember feeling buzzed like a 12 year-old!

A lot of the children s problems today rest with the parents. When you decide to have a child, y0u are lookin at 19+ years of molding and shaping him/her. A child does not thrive when parents stick them in front of a tv to learn morals and how life really is. Watch the Disney channel sometime and see how most of the adults are portrayed as idiotic buffoons. Look at the violence on tv and video games. Look at all the crap food is marketed to the children. Parenting is not supposted to be easy. Get their asses out from infront of the computer and tv and outside. Fix good fresh meals. Teach them to respect others and their elders. The parents of today are ruining our kids by taking the easy way out when it comes to child rasing. Schools are there to teach the 3 r s, not for the school districts and teachers to use them to mirror their political and moral beliefs. And don t get me started on the ADD bs and the state of today s educational system
I do not condone the actions of the op, but I can see his point. If I left the sight of my parents in a store and was found talking to a stranger, I would be in trouble. Sorry for the rant, people.
In closing, spend more time with your kids, teach them well, cook them a good, healthy meal more often, push them outside to play or get them into sports/dance, etc. to help them form relationships and get exercise. Kids are not the future, there parents are.

Has it ever occurred to any of the trolls that this kid definitely spoke out if turn to an adult and is an insolent brat who needs some old fashioned discipline upon the backside?. When my son was 12, had he ever...and I mean EVER, mouthed off to an adult...any adult, with some smug sense of whatever, his punishment would have been swift. Little kids, and yes 12 is still a little kid, should never mouth off to adults...especially strangers.
OP, I'm one of the few who enjoyed your tale and I hope you did feel better...sincerely.

As an aside...I remember being 12...that would be 1978...back then a 12 year old kid would get backhanded by an adult if he spoke out of turn or without provocation. Hurraynfor the new generation who encourage children to mouth off with no respect to total strangers....nice parenting....

Just regarding that part of your post:

My wife is big sister to a girl (12 yo) here who is living with her grandmother who is pretty helpless. Her mom is around but is currently getting surgery on her arms to reduce the effect of using them as pincushions. Interestingly, the girl has no weight issues. She's not very intelligent and very small for her age (due to how her mother took care of herself while pregnant) but she's at least trying to learn, she's a cute kid and she is very salvageable. She has her eyes wide open regarding her mom and her lifestyle.

There is another girl (15 YO) from our church that we tried to "take in" as a friend, but she is so obnoxious that it is making it difficult to even try to help her. She is fat, constantly hungry, and will not eat anything healthy we put in front of her. And no amount of encouragement or positive talk works on ANY subject. It's like talking to a bag of raw narcissism. She is utterly oblivious to any attempted teaching of any kind. It's like trying to talk rocket science to a two year old. We've decided to apply our efforts elsewhere.

The sad thing about the 15 year old is that she is a walking caricature of the multi-generation welfare recipient mentality. The idea of actually aspiring to earn your own living is so foreign to her that she can't grasp the concept. EVERYTHING is about how to simply "get stuff" from the government and other people. It permeates everything about her world. Here is just how derailed her family is:

She claims she was sexually abused multiple times several years ago by her mother's ex boyfriend. That man has re-entered the picture and he says he's really sorry and he's changed. He now lives in Texas. So, mom has decided to move to Texas with him, but she can't yet. So she wants this girl to move there first and live there for a couple months while mom gets things in order in KY before she moves. Seriously? Yes, seriously.

How do you fix that kind of stupid? And that is what it is. It is not ignorance. It is raw, unadulterated, in your face stupidity.

There is some very messed up stuff going on around here. It's like another species.

I've heard of the food insecurity issue, but not read much about it yet.

Can I ask a question, please? I've seen this again and again in these forums. Somebody says something that is arguably offensive in someway. Someone calls him on it. Then someone else calls him on it. Then a dozen more people call him on it. Eventually you have like 10 pages of people saying the same thing over and over in different ways to point out what a jerk the OP is. Is that really necessary? when you see someone else has already called the guy out, can't you just leave it at that or at the most, "like" the comment of the first guy who pointed out the OP's error? There's a point at which it becomes like a lynch mob mentality. Just because someone has said something or done something less than admirable does not make it right to subject them to this big, overblown public humiliation by the mob. Jeez, why don't you just put him in stocks and pelt him with rotten vegetables? Seriously though, please remember the golden rule: treat others as you would like to be treated. And as Forrest would say, "And that's all I have to say about that."

Anybody else remember that thread a week ago about people not reading through all the pages of replies before posting?

Personally, I quit reading after the 3rd page, then hopped over to the end. This thread fell apart really frickin fast. I don't know what would cause people to be banned from TalkBass, but I wouldn't be surprised if this is the last thread a few people get to participate in... If only the little 12 year old knew what kind of disaster would be born of his overconfident yet harmless comment.

I got two new basses this week. I'd post a NBD or two, heck maybe even three because I got another a few weeks ago. But, nobody cares. I guess I should start a thread about poverty, nutrition, GC and their policies and the way they are, silly kids and maybe a question about mixed drivers.
