12 year old know it all!...Not!

This thing really irritates me. The kid is 12. The OP could have maybe shown the kid how to use a tuner, or how to choose the right amp. You could have taught the kid something and helped him out. Not cool man, not cool at all.
Sometimes a person just hits you the wrong way at the wrong time. I think the guy's biggest complaint was the kid did not respect that he was an adult and treated him like a peer. My generation was taught that that is not how you act as a 12 year old. Not justifying the OP's response, but I can see where it may have come from.

It amuses me that adults are defending a child talking to an adult like they're equals. Just another step down the road of every child being a precious and unique snowflake, so fragile that they're damaged by an adult dishing back a bit of sass. My god, how did all of you make it childhood in such a cruel, cruel world?

I'm not seeing that. Most seem to be more critical of the response of the OP. And, while the child may have been obxnious, he really didn't seem that disrespectful......

It was probably Jed and not really Jethro:

1. You're a jerk. There were a million better, kinder ways to handle that and you chose none of them.
2. However, you're a jerk with a point. Kids are being trained to address and deal with adults as equals - by their parents - today. It's not OK and is causing real problems as they hit adolescence and hit the high schools. They won't observe limits and won't accept discipline.
3. In spite of that, seriously: you're a horrible person.
I wouldn't go as far as to say that...

I don't have enough information to determine exactly how disrespectful the kid was, or if he was just sort of bragging. Also, I'd probably have handle it differently (and not shared it on a web site).

Thing is, it is true that we no longer live in "a villiage", and do not have the authority to verbally chastise other people's kids, though I do it myself on occasion. But they have to righteously deserve it.

In the past, poor kids were not connected to the national vernacular. Keep in mind they do it to adults too, though. I dumped television in 1997. I'm no longer connected to their Jedi mind tricks. :)

It's why I have the opinions I do, and stray from the "common wisdom".

Again, we don't agree yet I haven't seen a traditional news show or commercial in years. Assumption null and void.

Has it ever occurred to any of the trolls that this kid definitely spoke out if turn to an adult and is an insolent brat who needs some old fashioned discipline upon the backside?. When my son was 12, had he ever...and I mean EVER, mouthed off to an adult...any adult, with some smug sense of whatever, his punishment would have been swift. Little kids, and yes 12 is still a little kid, should never mouth off to adults...especially strangers.
OP, I'm one of the few who enjoyed your tale and I hope you did feel better...sincerely.

Welcome to TB.

If you read the story at face value, there seemed to be no "mouthing off". Rather a child that may be a bit over confident. Well, he did DARE to speak to an adult......swift punishment needed!

As an aside...I remember being 12...that would be 1978...back then a 12 year old kid would get backhanded by an adult if he spoke out of turn or without provocation. Hurraynfor the new generation who encourage children to mouth off with no respect to total strangers....nice parenting....

Hurray for a time when you would feel justified in smacking a child that dared to speak!!!!

It was a real eye opener for me to move from Seattle to central, rural Kentucky. Did you know that four of the five poorest counties in the country are right here? People are poor for a reason. Every one is a different story. But the "poor" around here eat ridiculously unhealthy - and expensive - food. And a lot of it. We've worked with several of them individually, and they are surprisingly set in their ways. Meanwhile, I go on with my $2 worth of oatmeal, etc.

i.e. it's not about money. At least, not in the U.S. Now, Sudan is a bit different.

I live in Appalachia, so I see it, too. But poverty is linked to obesity, due in part to food insecurity. It may seem counterintuitive. But in developed countries it is the case, particularly in the West. There are a myriad of reasons for it. Some of which you touched on.

The kid the OP unleashed his charm on? Well, my son is 12. And despite all the boundaries, respect for elders, manner, etc... that his father and mother hound in to him, he has very little social filter and misses social cues. He would be the kid that would take something I told him way out of context and tell it to a stranger, in a seemingly obnoxious manner. When it happens I do my best to resolve the situation without pissing off too many adults, and smooth things over. I haven't ran into too many 'sociologists' like the OP, fortunately.

I agree with your premise, but I don't have enough info to be sure that is what actually happened. I think if I was there or had more information I may understand why the OP acted the way he did. After all, only a small part of communication is the actual words we use. We don't get a feel for HOW the kid came across, his body language, facial expressions, etc.
