12's?!! For Bass?!! Oh come now! Really?!!

@madjazzbass — FWIW, just had a shoot out with a Sunn 215BH and a single fEARful 12/6/1. The guys at the jam stood in stoned amazement when the 12 sounded bigger, thicker, lower, cleaner and way way louder than the vintage 215 cab. Like twice as loud! Same amp, same bass, same place in room, same bass player, same EQ—and as much master volume as could be handled cleanly by each cab.

You sound kinda like you're pulling our legs.

That said, it ability to construct motors that drive paper cones to make sound has improved to the point where a smaller paper cone can be driven more effectively, by most objective methods of measurement, than larger cones of the past could be driven.

I own a Sunn 2x15 (with JBLs) as well and my crappy little Acoustic 1x15 that will own the Sunn, anytime, any day for bottom and clarity. That fEARful is no joke, it will own many cabs-regardless of speaker size and price.

I sold a 1972 Bassman 100 with a 4x12 cab because it lack the punch and bottom end I needed. Gigged it for 5 years and then played through a friends 4x10 Ampeg setup, then sold the Bassman and purchased an Ampeg.

I since sold the Ampeg for a Sunn and now I am going for a vintage Acoustic and modern Aguilar setup. Best of both worlds. Different tools for different jobs.

I love 15s but the Aguilar 12s are just so impressive. Most modern 12s CAN do it all.

I want someone to build me a conical bass cab with 1000 x 1.5" drivers and frequency response down to 15Hz. There could be lots of tiny little ports between the drivers for enclosure tuning and being conical it would be genuinely omni-directional. The only problem will be balancing my amp on the pointy tip.

yup....I have a 410 and love it. The bass player in my favorite local band plays a 2x15 and I love the sound...bright and punchy, but low and boomy..and old Sunn cabinet with a Sunn amp. I had a 112 combo and didn't like it, but it was really the cone material and amp that I didn't like, not the size itself. I don't have any experience with 8's or decent 12's so I can't say...but whatever work for you (or anyone else)...

I will admit i am a guitarist and after my openback 1X12 combo broke and I had to use a closed-back 1x12 combo which was almost inaudible on stage i would assume that for bassist you want a 10" speaker if you want the high mids to disperse in a wider angle. 12" and especially 15" are very directional in the high frequencies and even with a horn with the typical 3.5KHz crossover you got a beam of 1.8-3kHz that you wont hear on stage but some people in the audience gets the laser beam high.

After playing/owning many amps/cabs in different configurations and driver sizes, I prefer 10s. I've always been partial to 410s, but my Fender Rumble 500 (210 combo) has really blown me away recently. I was never a huge fan of the 115 combos I've owned.
