My amp is 150W at 4ohms and the replacement speaker was 350W-4ohm.
Isn't the safe bet to have more amp than speaker? Or, at minimum a closer match. That way the inexpensive speaker becomes the weak link. Pushing the amp too far causing it to clip will eventually ruin the expensive side of the equation. Wouldn't the higher rated speaker cause more excessive clipping in the power amp to achieve the same volume levels?

The power rating of a driver only tells you how much heat it is capable of absorbing before there is
potential damage, and it is not the most likely cause of damage; that is usually overexcursion (in BG rigs). Your 450W driver will not fail with 455W, and if I put a test tone at a constant level, measured 450W, then the driver could probably take that for a long time before it failed (provided no overexcursion). The power rating also does not determine, how loud it will go, nor how much power it will
consume at any given moment. Amplifiers
provide power to a speaker; a speaker just
consumes it.
An amplifier will clip when it runs out of voltage and/or current capacity. What determines when that is, is the signal level, the speakers impedance and the design of the amplifier. Notice I didn't mention the speaker's power handling?
So your amp is capable, if you turn it up loud enough, of providing 150W to the speaker, but the speaker is rated at 3x that so even if the amp clips in a huge way (and it would sound bloody attrocious) then your driver will happilly sail along consuming the power provided without damage (assuming no overexcursion).
NB; excursion is how far the speaker driver moves in and out with signal. Different drivers have different limits (in the spec sheet as Xmax). Both the driver and the box determine at what level and frequencies it runs out. There is sometimes a similar figure given called Xlim: Bill's pithy comment on the subject goes something like " at Xmax, sounds bad, at Xlim, it breaks".
You cannot underpower a cab. When you're at home practicing with your rig at bedroom levels, the amp is providing only a watt or two. If you could 'underpower', then using it this way would kill it, no?
