Agreed but I'll add a third option... fast, funky, with space.

That is quite rare though - although I could name another player for that category : Alex Malheiros of the Brazilian band - Azymuth. He is a very funky player and I love his tone and playing in recent years.

So the last album of theirs that I have "Partido Novo" - has a track where the bass plays a 16th note line at a very fast tempo, but then has a break for 2 bars.

Then there's the funky fills kind of player like Anthony Jackson. He can play an 1/8th note groove with impeccable note choices (obviously IMO) and then drop a 16th fill that floors me.

I haven't heard a lot of Steve Bailey. I do recall watching one of those bass vids in a store...Bailey was tearing through a Rocco/Jaco groove.

Any suggestions for CDs? I love Brazilian crossovers with funk, but we don't get to see any CDs in the shops here.

I remember Airto/Flora Purim bringing a really funky/fusion band over here a few years ago with a great Brazilian giutarist, but can't remember his name - it might have been the same person?

I loved the gig, as it was in Hove which is a pretty conservative area and all the audience were expecting light bossa nova stuff - and they got this really loud electric fusion of funk and Jazz with a bit of Airto hitting things and making funy noises - like Miles's electric period meets ethnic Brazilian.

At one point I went to get a drink and realised there was more of the audience in the foyer than in the hall!!

Randy Jackson is in the March issue of Bass Player; I'm in the process of burning some of my '70s albums onto disc...one of the tunes is "The Real Thang" by Narada Michael Walden w/ Jackson on bass. Caramba. I used to play this back then in a band...I don't see how I pulled it off(probably a lame-o attempt).
T.M. Stevens sounds equally good on Narada's "Tonight, I'm Alright" & "I Shoulda Loved Ya".

No, I know Percy's playing mostly through Brand X's Product and his Propeller Music album. Phil does a good job. I should check out the ones you mentioned.

Product and Propeller Music are great... I can't remember if Both of those albums have both Phil Collins and Kenny Dennard playing on them... I do know that Livestock has both Phil and Kenny playing, pretty moving fusion... if ya ask me.

Anyway - my main point was that if somebody starts talking about Rocco and 16th note finger funk - then this suggests people like Jaco and Gary Willis etc. as being in a similar vein.

to me, gary willis' feel sounds a lot more influenced by paul jackson than jaco. especially his solo albums. hes got that stank greasy thing that pj has that jaco could never pull off. imo, that barrage of 16ths that jaco does is akin to flea and white boy funk.

ive got that chicago boot of herbie's group with jaco on bass from 77 and jaco's take on jackson's line on hang up your hang ups is not impressive at all.
