18 inch cab

I have been sitting the two cab's wood on wood and it's so deep and groaly, the top cab has been known to move.

Hopefully that's due to a weak stage and not a weak cab.:D

Lot's of emotional reactions here for sure, not trying to start a pissin' contest but I thought it might have.:D

Point is learn what you like about your speakers whether it be response (or lack of) or directionality (or lack of) and look for that in other speakers. Don't assume "bigger=more bass" or "smaller = more punch", it's not true. Also read up and learn the difference between what you think you're hearing and what you're really hearing.

Root fifth, so far in this thread, the only knowledgeable answers in your questions have come from the same people you've criticized. Pretty much everything else everyone has offered (minus rgiger) is specious, trollish, or uninformed. You'd be wise to do some reading. A lot of reading.

Even in your first post, you say you love the sound of a single 15. What single 15 are you referring to? I've played dozens of 1x15s over the years and they all sounded different from one another...

I don't think peavey makes any 18" bass cabs anymore, for quite a while. and actually I think they have a 215 in the works, there are pictures but I don't think you can actually buy one (for shame PV.)

but also while I like the sound of my cabs, I'm not naive enough to think they are well designed cabs sonically. I'm sure that if we went to greenboy and said "we've got the jingle, and the room, lets build a 118 cab, or even a 18" cab with a midrange driver, etc" that he could do it, and I bet that cab would shut some people up :D

EXCEPT I see he's been banned even before our 18" concept could even coalesce, big cab guys are undermined at every turn here at TB I tell you...

EDIT: ...must...learn...ignore...off...topic...tiny...
speaker...propaganda...

the last time I checked "Trolling" is defined in part as "off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog with the primary intent of disrupting normal on-topic discussion...

when you post to a thread telling the guy to read reams of info (good info I don't dispute that) about why little speakers are a lot better than big speakers, you are trolling. period.
I take a wider definition of trolling, but otherwise, I agree with you to a certain extent. I stand by the fact that much of what has been posted is specious. I left you out intentionally, because I think you meaningfully contributed. I'm not naive enough to believe that 18s are worthless - hell I have a Behri 18 sub that I love to run with a yorkville 1x15 for dub - but there is not enough information being provided to steer the OP into the realm of what he seeks. And further to the point, much of it is specious. To know what you seek, you first must know what need...

Beej thank you for your consern but i never asked to get into the tech side of speakers. And for person after person to put in there 2 cents with out respect for the ? bothers me.I asked is anyne using 18s and then aimed at those using them what they thought.I never asked for the speaker experts to give me the break down.Although i do find it funny when i tried to ask some of these speaker pro some ?s and got shot down for doing so.

Actually, you asked "what do you guys think about a single 18" and you got a whole bunch of answers that described what people thought! :D

Its hard not to get into the science when talking amps and cabs, because it is a science-based topic, so you're going to bring out the minions right away with a wide entry point like your original post.

Where I was going was in line with others. For your sonic needs, many things need to be considered, but speaker size itself is not terribly important, unless your sonic needs are also influenced by your emotional desire to have something big. ;) My Acme B2 puts out more bone-shaking lows than my 1x18 sub does, and it only has two 10's providing the bass. Size has little to do with it.

The point is, if you want your 18's then go for it, but you won't necessarily be getting anything lower than you would if you had 410s instead - it really depends on what speakers are used and how the cab is designed.

My real world experience with them: I had two peavey 1x18s in a stack for a while and they are low, but a bit muddy in comparison to the identical 4x10. They both go low, but the 10's were "snappier" (I hate descriptors like that!).

Currently I have a Behringer 18" PA sub that I play either with a 2x10 or a 1x15. My 1x15 sucks so its like a natural low pass filter anyway, and combined with the sub is a perfect wall of thud for dub. But really, we're talking a lot about perception here - if you hear something and it sounds good to you, that's all that really matters...

thanks, since you have been a member here a lot longer than I have you no doubt already know what I have finally learned: You can type till you are blue in the fingers, if "They" are gonna show up and "Show you!" then that's what they're gonna do, and you won't be able to do a thing about it...

I use an 18 with a 4x10 from time to time. I prefer my 2 or 4x15 (with horns) rig for larger stages and for small venues the 2x12 SWR Silverado Special I have sounds incredible.

In the 70s I had a 1x18 Cerwin Vega folded horn that I used and with plenty of treble EQ it actually sounded awesome... nice round tone. Outdoor it couldn't be beat. The difficult thing with it was the hall or venue really affected the low end roll off and I had a tough time when we played in large gymnasiums keeping it from booming too much. I finally figured out how to EQ it so it worked well, just took some experimentation.

Ok i'll make my lame attempt to explain my thought process.I find with a lower budget one can not afford a smaller cab capable of getting the lows i would like. But i have noticed when moving up in speaker size (not quality) but still staying in the same budget the lows seem to be more noticable.I like a low muddy sound the few guys i jam with like the sound i am trying to get and since there are no plans to gig cab size does not matter. Also seems to take alot more power to pull lows from 10s than it does from 15s.So right or wrong this is where i am at.

I have an old Ampeg B-18 cab loaded with a JBL that I drag out every once in a while and play with one of my tube heads. It sounds pretty good but then again I am partial to a muddy and warm reggae style. I usually get complements on how good the bass sound from audience and sound guys alike but i will agree that the sound is unfocused. It is excellent in the studio. That is my only experience with an 18.

For a lot of shows I play thru a 4x10 now. It is much clearer and I appreciate the mids that I might have been ignoring in my past.

Every once in a while tho...

I get it, I played a gig a few months ago with another band and the bassist was using a Carvin 1x18 cabinet. It sounded great. I don't use mine much but I'll have to give it a go.

The lows are indeed more noticeable because the higher frequency content is harder to hear if you're not standing with the speaker pointed at your head.

A similar effect can be had by turning down the treble on your amp. However, many good-quality used 4x10s will actually go lower than a 1x18 (and be more efficient) at the expense of weight (and again dispersion, since you've got a lot of speaker area adjacent.

I guess my point is, I've found it easier to go "low" on a budget by grabbing a decent used 4x10 and turning knobs on the amp.

What are you running for an amp head?

Just a old music man 65 right now but want to upgrade my complete setup.Look i would love to go get a mark bass combo wich is more than load enough and gets low and i can carry with one hand there is a ton of upside to somthing like that. But the fact is i dont have 1200 bucks to drop on a rig.The ideal is to get a cab now and upgrade head later.

Back in the 70's, I also used a Cerwin Vega cab that had the folded horn 18 (whatever that meant), and a front loaded 12". I believe it was the B36-MF model...it was a beast...The amp I was using at that time was a Sunn Concert Bass head...

And I have to agree with Dr. Eagle, It could be very deep, but the one thing I remember was it could get really "honky" or boomy sounding it different rooms. That was not a rig I could set one way and have work for me anywhere.
