1958 Fender Precision

I'll be curious as to the neck width of the bass, and if anyone who has a '58 could chime in as well.

I thought the pre '60 Ps had a width at the nut somewhere between the later B and C widths, and was surprised when the '58 AV came out width the wide C neck.

Can anyone comment?

I'm not sure, but I can let you know in a couple of days.

Thanks again everyone for weighing in and providing your opinions, thoughts, and comments. It was very interesting to read everyone's pros and cons of the deal and I learned quite a bit. This is what makes this community and bass players awesome! This wasn't an easy decision, but I know it's one I am comfortable with and happy about!:):bassist:

Oh, I forgot to share this.....here's a pic my buddy took of me holding the beauty right after I got done playing it last Saturday. It had me hook, line, and sinker at that point......:D

Yeah, my two 58's (July and December) had totally different neck widths and profiles. The later one had a very wide and flat neck, just like a typical early 60's P bass, sometimes referred to as a "pancake" neck. The earlier one (July) was narrower at the nut, and had a noticeable "vee" shaped profile. I also had an early '59 maple/ano, it's neck dimensions were somewhere between the two 58,s.

Typical for 59's to not have a neck date
My 1956 had a pencil date. I've seen lots of 50s and 60s basses and all have had a date. I've read a lot and Fender books too, and no mention of lack neck dates. The only time I ever hear anyone say that's it's common is when they have a guitar or bass or are selling one w/o a date.

Check out this link....about a quarter of the way down the page where it says "Fender Neck Dates, 1950 to present", specifically "Early 1959". The body date on my P is "3/59" and the pots date to the 16th week of 1959. :)

Vintage Guitars Info - Fender, collecting vintage guitars fender stratocaster, strat, telecaster, tele

This isn't the only place that mentions this...

Also, I have sent all of the pictures of the bass, including the neck heel to George Gruhn, and he has given me an official appraisal and certification that the bass is 100% original to the year 1959. :)

I got home late tonight....but will try to post pics before the weekend is over.

Interesting detail. For those not following the link, the site referenced explains that Fender suspended the use of pencil dating on necks for roughly
the first half of the year due to a complaint about an obscenity having been penciled on a neck heel.

Great to hear there was bass trolling even back in the 50's!

Not sure, but I found the 58RI width combined with the "large C" to be unbearable and I sold it and went back to my MIM 50's Classic which is very similar to the 57RI.
