1958 Fender Precision

I completely understand this. If I go through with this trade, I would still have an all-original '66 P, a CS '64 P Relic (in Daphne Blue), and a CS Pino Palladino Signature P as part of my collection. They are all killer P's. I played the '58 this past weekend and it sounded like thunder and played like butter. It would make the Precision Bass part of my collection (being a Pre-CBS) "complete". :)

I've owned 60's fenders and 50's-70's Gibsons, a Fender CS, And MIM, MIA, MIJ to infinity and beyond and all kinds of other crap...in my experience older does not by any means mean better. Better means better.

I'd play the thing, and have all your current basses set up next to you while you do it. Switch back and forth, and don't lie to yourself just because the 58 has cool kid appeal.

These are all great things to take into consideration and is definitely giving me stuff to think about.

The basses that I'm considering in the trade deal are basses that I've amassed over time and in some cases were impulse buys because I thought they were unique or cool. They, for the most part, have wound up just sitting in my closet getting used on random gigs here and there, just for the sake of using it. Same with the amp gear in the trade. I have a bunch of other great amps and cabs that I use regularly, and the ones offered up in the trade just sit for the most part.

I had been thinking for a while that maybe I had too many basses. I have also been thinking for a while that an all-original Pre-CBS Fender may never be within reach for me. Those two thoughts collided when I saw and played the '58 this past weekend.

Dang not knowing details of your basses I would say thats used value roughly $9,000 in basses +/- $1,000, without the amp stuff. However it seems like a fair deal for what he is asking for the P, in order to do a straight trade. Even if your stuff priced all out could sell for $1000 more then his asking price, you have to consider your time. Selling 7 basses is a lot of work, especially if your shipping which again becomes a hidden fee, then paypal fees, eBay or Reverb fees and crossing your fingers nothing breaks in transit.

If they aren't your main players then heck yes, provided you think the 58 feels good and so long as the values match up reasonably. I unloaded a bunch of instruments I had but had no real attachment to when I needed a down payment for my house - including some of the vintage stuff I had - and have never once questioned that decision or missed the gear.

I would make the trade and then make as much use of the '58as possible. I have a '59 and while I'm not always ready to drag it to some club for a gig, I use it for recordings all the time. Nothing else like it.
