I've already tried using that as a bargaining chip and no such luck. I was told that the value does not change between a '58 and '59 maple neck/anodized pickguard P and that the seller is firm in his price.
Oh well, worth a try anyways.

Go for the '58! Having said that I'd do the personal loan/CC thing and sell your gear to cover it. Someone one usually takes a bath trading.
It's a heavy son of a gun 11.34 Lbs. Are all the old basses that heavy?
