1964 Ears Owners Group

Please explain more. Thanks in advance
Which part?? ADEL - >> Invalid Link Removed
Ambient ports - basically let levels of external sounds into the the closed area sealed by your customs. That seal is what enables all that bass to be heard. If you open that chamber, you lose bass. The amount lost will depend on the ambient port levels (-6, -9, -15, -18, -24dB) with the lower numbers losing more bass than the higher.

My drummer has A4's so I'm familiar w the design. I play other type gigs though where the full drum set isn't micd. I'm worrying about the complete isolation of custom molds. Singer in one of my projects has ultimate ears and regrets he didn't get the ambient option

The isolation isn't complete. It's around -26dB and there IS some bleed of external audio. It is NOT complete isolation, not like sticking your fingers in your ears. At least not for me... I often leave them in between sets - to save my ears from from the loud DJ music that gets played, and I've learnt to be able to have conversations with them in place. That's me.. but I may just be weird! ;)
See if you can find someone that has a set with ambient ports.. trying them is about the only way test that.
Failing that, call 1964 .. describe your situation and ask what they recommend. They advised me (2.5 yrs ago) to NOT go with ambient ports for bass for the reasons I gave you above - as I had the same concerns you do.

While each to their own.. I only need kick/snare in my mix and in small places, you CAN/WILL hear an acoustic kit even with custom mold IEM's in.. especially cymbals.

I can see the singer wanting an ambient port, but for the musicians, especially bass, you will hear plenty of high-pitched instruments, especially snare, cymbals and guitar with the IEM's in, and moreso with the ADEL's than the Qi's (they have -19db and -24db respectively). I'm glad I don't have an ambient and I play predominantly with unmic'd instruments on small stages. Would be nice to have a bit more kick drum, but that is the only one that I lack. I'm the only one on IEM's.

I've used in ears for 10+ years. The reason I asked is that I can get a "deal" through 1964. That being said they are still miles more expensive than any other set I've owned or used. Didn't want to pony up $800 and be underwhelmed. Lol. Thanks for the comments

FWIW - I run Qi's for slightly over 2 yrs.. and right now my A8's are sitting in Memphis, TN on their way to me.. Monday I hope.
Based on prior experience, I'm stoked to see the difference is sound stage/signature with 8 drivers and the ADEL modules.. yeah, I've spent the $$ to but quality buds in my ears..
When you compare the A12's to JH's Layla or Roxanne pricing - without ADEL..... ??

Full disclosure: Yes, my band ARE 1964 Artists (endorsees), but I was using 1964 ears for 2 yrs before that came about.

So....
my 1964 Audio auto-ADEL A8's arrived this afternoon..
this is a VERY BRIEF "FIRST IMPRESSIONS" update as I spent little time with them so far.. WFH today. So yes, actually working while posting this..
I'm not a paid reviewer so bare with me..

I would post pics, but my phone cam is not picking up black exterior/charcoal shells and the red/blue 1964 Audio/ADEL logos AT ALL! I Will work on that - but they look like this..
upload_2016-4-18_14-32-48.png

Nothing scientific here, but I ran some songs that I am REAL familiar with (Johnny Lang - Darker Side, Acoustic Alchemy - The Last Flamenco) that I have used for PA reference audio (back in those days) and ran it thru the Neutron music player (Android) which is EQ'd for my 1964 Qi's listening pleasure. In other words.. I changed nothing for the A8's.

The fit was good.. a little tight in the right ear, but I attribute this to the A8's being deeper (as in wide - sticking out from one's ears) and quite a bit heavier than the Qi's. To be expected given double the number of BA's and an ADEL module in each unit.
The new style 48" black cable is twin-core it's entire length with heat shrink tubing where the old plastic "Y" split used to be.. less breakage IME. Nice!

I know, I know.. how did they sound ???
First impressions - not significantly or "obviously" better than the Qi's. Not WOW!, but some subtle/distinct differences.
First, the sound stage in the A8's was "wider" (better?) and the overall mix was more "airy" - maybe due to the ADEL's ??
No lack of bass, nor bass heavy and very distinct mids and upper freq ranges.
The sub-bass levels - very prevalent in the Last Flamenco - where much more "evident" and distinct in the A8's than the Qi's.
The Qi's were more in-your-face and "there" ... if you get my meaning.

I'll try some more tonight..
I have about 22 hrs of gigging (starting Wed night) and 8 hours of flying time between now and May 5th.
That should give me plenty of time to form a REAL opinion of the A8's.

NOTE: some of you may know that I use the REV33 device between my Qi's and IEM receiver. This was NOT used during the above comparison. I have NOT yet ordered the REV33 device for the A8's. It's a different model.. figures!!

UPDATE: I forgot to mention that my Qi's are using my BTG Audio "midnight" after-market cable and the A8's were using the stock factory cable.

Should be interesting. I have Qis also. My A12s ship today of tomorrow.

I have read about the Rev33 and thought about buying one before I bought my A4's. When you get your new Rev33, I would like to hear your thoughts on using it with your A8's.

The REV33 works well with my Qi's. I would "assume" that it would do the same for the A8's. Different REV33 model required, but I've not bought one yet. Will try the A8's at their first gig tomorrow (Wed) night.. then decide. It's merely another $133 + S/H + Tax ($150) :)

Very cool! My singer complains about volume issues at the end of the night, maybe these are the ticket for him. Then again, he's using Shure SE215's soooooo....
THAT might be part of his problem, but my experience with the device is a thumbs up.. appears to do what it says.. I just ordered one for my A8's.

I tried to get the other band members to go custom with me and the drummer, even offered to take band money and front them 60% of the cost, they opted to buy something else. My drummer and I are shaking our heads all the time at them.
I have the same challenge with the 2 guitar players in our band... they cannot get over the "isolation" and the lack of the amp-in-the-room sound/feel... plus.. they won't take the time to dial in their IEM mix and blame the equipment, not their inability to adjust to the change.
Some folks will simply never get comfortable with the IEM approach.. I don't understand it, but it's reality!
SO we'll continue to carry a couple of powered wedges and run XLR feeds to them.. for now.
