1969 Ampeg SVT

69 is too old! Don't know where that thing's been :)

:D:scowl::D

Somehow, when he said "69", I couldn't help but recall the old show "Beavis and Butthead".....hahahaha - he said 69....

But seriously folks......

Look, the early Ampeg gear, just like the Acoustic Control Gear, is (IMO) the standard to which all others have striven for since then...Absolutely GREAT amp!

Mine is a blue line, has the relay socket, 6146 tubes, unpainted chassis and the pots are dated 137-7004.
I guess I have a 1970's model.

Come to think of it...I never dated mine with the pots. That'll just rock my whole world if it's a 70. I'll never be the same again. Oh well, I'll cross that bridge when I sell it. Till then, it's a 69 ;)

Oh, ok.
I thought it was like a Beavis and Butthead thing:
"He said 69 ... huh huh huh ... "
"Yeah! he he he he he "
"Huh huh huh he he ..."
" 69! hehehehehe uhuhuhuhuhuhuhuh ... "
I actually like that better.
Everybody who tries to sell a early 70's SVT swears it is a "1969" model. From what I have read (see below), there were very few actually produced in 1969.

I read that the SVT equipped with the 6146 tubes had an issue of heat build-up, from using those transmitter tubes .... I believe they switched to the 6550's for that reason, and they were more reliable & less expensive
More reliable is debatable. But 6146's are way less expensive these days. They're kind of hot, I guess, but they work extremely well in the SVT. Another problem was the plate caps and having plate voltage easily available for the user to die from if they weren't careful. Funny, though, I never heard of anyone dying from it ;) but I guess manufacturers frown on it.

I've got an old YBA-3A and it uses a very similar type of tube, a 6kg6 tube, with the top of the tube having a connection, and I had really no problen in finding those old vertical hold, TV tubes, when I had it retubed about a year ago, my tech just replaced the top wires with new wire and connectors and he had the tubes in stock paid $32.00 each for them

Those are horizontal output tubes not vert. hold, $32.00? I need to go through my old TV tubes! The caps on top are the plate voltage connection BTW, the highest voltage available to a tube.

When the amp went in the shop the wiring insulation was cracked every 1/8" or so, and the covering for the clips was in the same shape ... I could see where one could get curly hair or better yet dead .... when poking around with the amp powered up ... I was told that the newer type wire insulation material has better heat resistance properties ..... couldn't remember what he said about the tubes ...just remembered something about TV and Hold ... either way got the amp running again that's all I wanted

another thing--make sure you have good ventilation when soldering. extremely poisonous!

according to the article in the new bass gear mag, they switched to 6550's because
they were more durable. great article by the way...
