1970's Rush

Ah. Xanadu. The greatest song from "A Farewell to Kings".
Rush is the band that made me want to play bass.

Just covered that song last week... got as close as we could but it's hard to capture the essence of the song sometimes.
A couple of observations:
- Did Geddy borrow that kimono from Lindsey Buckingham, or the other way around? And didn't Johnny Depp wind up with Neil's shirt in Pirates Of The Carribean?
- Rush nailed the 70s rock-star look!
- I read somewhere - Guitar Player or Bass Player Magazine, I'm not sure which one - that they did Xanadu in one take. No mistakes, no do-overs. Absolutely unbelievable musicianship. The engineer must have loved it. Record Rush, and be home in time for supper!
- Geddy's double-neck Rick looked like a real backbreaker! You need a young, fit back to play it. No wonder he doesn't play it anymore!

What's interesting is you see this video, then you watch various Rush cover bands, and even with several players with better equipment and years of copying Rush's songs, they still can't pull off the smooth work Rush does in 1978.
And I've seen very few guys take on the bass/keyboards/vocals spot that Geddy makes look so easy.

the 4080's arent actually that heavy. at least mine isn't. not much more than one of my heavier 7's, and substantially less than my doubleneck 7.
From what I've read both Geddy and Alex loved Yes and went to see them in concert. Yes had a period where they wore stuff like that...so, Geddy just had to have one...
In this video you don't see them with their high platform shoes...
The guy that sold me one of my bass cabs said when he first went to their 2112 concernt he thought there were witches! Long hair, flowing robes, the intro to 2112, stage smoke and that voice....
I was fortunate enough to see them several times during this stage and earlier. They are still great, but when they were hungry and still proving themselves it was a truly awesome thing to experience one of their shows.

I guess looks can be deceiving. It certainly looks like one heavy mother! Me, I'm too damn old, I'd be at my chiropractor if I tried playing it for any length of time!
I say go for it!! If you have no regrets than it wouldn't matter what "the others" say.
Heck I wore duct-tape for pants at a recent gig. (TMI???) 
Personally, I would love to see the plaid, quilt-stitched, bell-bottomed leisure suits that the Bay City Rollers used to wear, to come back in style. Picture all the crapy kiddie bands that are out there today having to follow a heinous trend like that.
I'd love to see a band like Disturbed try to pull off the "angry young boy" schtick whilst sporting matching head-to-toe polyester. 
I'd extend that to '81 Love Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures along with their earlier albums.
I got introduced to them just before Moving Pictures came out, but I hadn't formed an opinion of their music yet.
What did those of you that heard their early material think when Permananet Waves and Moving Pictures came out?
It must have been quite a shift to hear the change in musical direction from 2112, Farewell To Kings and Hemispheres to Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures.
Throw in Signals too. After that, no more Rickenbacker and more and more keyboards and layered vocals.
Signals is a strong album.
