Don't really know if anyone is interested in my story. I picked up a weird bass from eBay for very little money. It was from the Ukraine and it is called a Kavkaz 'Bas". Probably dates to about 1978 or so, but since records from the USSR are hard to find, I am just going with it. The bass was not playable when I received it. So I decided to strip off the paint on the neck to sand it smooth and refresh it. Hopefully making it more playable. Well the neck delaminated and the headstock crumbled!. So the bass sat for many years. I bought a Chinese short scale paddle headstock neck and there they sat for about 2 years. The opportunity came up for me to jump into a shop with a CNC lathe, all the needed tools, so off to rebuilding I went. We skimmed the neck pocket about a mm on each side and the neck fit. Then we grabbed a pic of the headstock (the original neck was binned a long time ago) and the CNC cut out a pretty good likeness of the shape and the tuner holes. Now, I am having a 3D nut printed and I put some stain on the neck for a finish. It is coming together pretty nicely. The pickups and everything worked, I just need to put it all back together and set it up so it is playable. Pretty fun restoration. Thanks to my friends at Gateway Technical College for offering a class in guitar repair/building.. Here are a few pic's as I have gone along. Should have some ending pics next week. I have replaced the 5 pin DIN jack with a regular 1/4" barrel jack without any modifications.

"ММП" (MMP) means "Ministerstvo Mestnoy Promyshlennosti", i.e. Ministry of the Local Industry
"Росмузпром" (Rosmuzprom) is an abbreviation for "Rossiyskaya Muzykal'naya Promyshlennost'" (Russian Musical Industry)
"РСТ" (RST) means "Respublikanskiy standart" (Republican standard), 508-75 is a number of this standard in some state registry
"Ростов на Дону" ((Rostov na Donu) is a city where the factory was located

The price of the bass, 145 roubles, was an average monthly salary of an engineer or an accountant around 1980.

Love this! What material will the the nut be made of?
The nut will be 3D printed and made from whatever material that is. Probably plastic. We used a micrometer to do all the measurements and should have a really good fit for the new replacement nut.

The most common plastics used in 3D printers are PLA and PETG. Both are too soft to use for a nut.

Uncharted water for me as this restoration is taking place through a continuing education program at my local technical college - Gateway Technical College. I know they have done other projects like this, so maybe they use a different material. I will have to check on that though. Thank you for pointing that out
