I think the trick is in the new technologies that didn't exist 10 years ago and what people (audiences?) expect. There's a sort of expectation by some players and audiences that that way to go if you're really serious is something like an original Marshal stack of 8 12"s. What's intersting about that is I come from a time when the amps were 45 watt valve amps and the speakers were 25 watt rating each. So the 8 12" didn't go all farty, but the amp was mega loud by today's standards.
With amps getting really cheap and speakers being able to handle so much more power, there's two routes. Small but inefficient cabs and huge wattage or less wattage and efficient bigger cabs. So a 2 10"s or even a 1 10" is possible in more efficent, lighter cabs than would have been possible 10 years ago.
I'm thinking a 1x12" in an efficient cab with a 300 watt amp and put the speaker on a short pole to get it up off the ground. Radical, but I'mm frustrated at hauling a 4x10" that sounds bad but is standard product. There's a better way.
Anyway I'm done with playing so loud the audience leaves.
