1x10 for bass enough?

hey i folks

so i plan to make me a tiny rig that can be travel easely for little gig . my plan was to build a 1x10 cab whit a eminence 300watt in 8 ohm . my head is a ampeg b-5r whit 220 watt of power in 8 ohm. So the question is ... do you thinks this rig will work in a little gig situation ... or do i have enough power to play whit a little jazz quartet while cutting trouhg the mix and well be heard

(im a Québecois so that why my english is that poor)

phil:)

You're going to be the only person here to know for sure, so I'd say go for it. Try it.

my 1x10 120 watt hartke kickback combo was well able to carry the pocket AND cut through the mix in small to med size room.....50 to 150 people. truly a great amp

I agree. My kickback 10 has as much bottom and will go a bit louder than my '71 Ampeg B15N for comparison.

The kickback 10 does work with the drums/2 guitars if it isn't a super loud band.

The catch is that it doesn't carry, but that is not an issue if you have PA support.

last night i play in the same littel bar ( like 100 person place bar) and we where playing with a other band and i ask the other bassist to bring his amp because im realy tiried of bring my big 1x15 and the rackmount. so i came to bar like i does each week and see a tyny beringher sitting at the left of the drum im almost start laughing it was a beringher 1x12 whit 60 watt of power . i was very septical about because usualy i play half volume whit my ampeg 220watt. so i plug it in to the sound check and i was on the ass the volume was at 10 o clock and the bar was full by the bass sound. the sound was not the best sound i play whit but it was potable. i do the gig whit it and everything work fine i was very impress of that 1x12 combo . after the show some people come to compliment onthe sound of our band. so what do you think of this experience ??? i dont believe it my self but i almost convict that my 1x10 cab with 220 watt will be able to do it

OK, I'm gonna sound snooty here but I have tried the above SWR and Hartke rigs and they are not up to par tone-wise or headroom-wise.

More specifically, I used the Hartke except the 12" instead of the 10". I actually liked it but it had little volume and the low end below say 80hz was poor and 60hz was below measuring. Forget about a B string. My friend liked the 10" but only as monitor and the lack of lows were good to avoid feedback on his URB.

The SWRs sound different tone-wise but again lacked headroom. Strong roll-off of lows too.

So, can it even be done? Yes, but with:
1) a 1x10 that is already loud ie efficient
2) some serious watts
3) even better to have a high pass filter - it really cleans things up tone-wise and gives more headroom.

I have done it with 600 watts into an efficient 1x10 and a high pass filter. This is my opinion. But sometimes compromise is necessary so it's good to have the above opinions to consider.

All that said, it will sound better with two tens. :D

HA HA-you're not snooty, just realistic.

I did find that the Hartke 10 seems to compress more on the lower notes (including the B string) than the 12. Probably so the speaker doesn't get ripped to shreds.

It is a proximity kinda thing though. At practice standing close to the Hartke with a moderate rock band, you can hear yourself fine and there is a nice punch. Get out about 15 feet and it disappears. That is where you use the DI into the PA.

Of course these small amps aren't made for large stages and holding a club on their own....but, if you play in a cramped bar area, they do have a purpose.

My Carvin 1x10 PB 150 has been serving me well for 20 years. I use it stand alone for band practice and small coffee shop gigs. I attach a 1x12 extension for small club gigs, country clubs, small bars, etc....a 1x10 does alot of stuff well. Just don't expect it to rumble the floor boards. It's a very versatile combo.

you have to know that is not a traynor cab it was and old combo that i sealed up inside and remove the amp it was i think a traynor bloc 20 that i paid 20 buck for it and yess the speaker is a eminece gamma that cost me 25$ on ebay

My 250W 1x10 combo sounds awesome. When a speaker actually gets to be driven right it can do some great things.

After thinking long and hard, and realizing the inherent differences of speakers, any speaker pushed properly can sound amazing.

How much air do you need to move?
How much space do you need to fill with sound
how much punch can your amp deliver?

I know I'm gonna have to stop asking this question when I get an extension cab...but then I'll have more than just one ten.

I think it'll work for the music you're playing. I am assuming there will be PA support?
I would personally like a little bit more, 2 tens would be ideal. But if we're talking a jazz quartet at low to medium volume at small gigs, I'd imagine you'd get by ok.
