I voted alchohol as the number one most common cause basically because it's sooooo available. My peeve is the stoner who can't remember their part and/or are too busy getting stoned everyday to learn the songs. The band I'm in now fired our last rhythm guitarist for being a stoner and holding the rest of the band back. Just about any drug is a problem when it becomes a lifestyle.

I was a frequent poster in the other thread. While acceptance of alcohol and drug use is higher in the arts & entertainment industry than in others, it's a serious matter. Stardom has a price to pay, and addiction can be one of them. There's tons or anecdotes, tons of myths, tons of rumors, but one thing is certain. Abuse of alcohol or drugs can have fatal consequences.
I agree, that's why I'm interested in data. I know intoxicated trainwrecks happen from personal experience. I'm interested in quantifying how bad the problem is, and what the real culprits are.

I needed three.

Alcohol is most common, but from a functionality standpoint, I have seen what happens when people pop a zanex and try to perform. Also, hallucinogens will make a person stray from the structure of a song in a hurry. However, if everybody is tripping, I have seen some interesting musical jams with hallucinogens.
I thought about adding barbiturates to the poll, but figured regular users weren't getting much work.

I voted for alcohol as the most prominent. Was in a band for a while with a guitarist (thought himself the "leader") who would frequently show up to practice too drunk and ornery to play. We only had like 5 gigs before dissolving (in a fit of rage quit on his part), so he didn't have much chance to be too drunk for a gig (not that he didn't try).

here we go again....lol alcohol is by far the most abused, too damned easy to get at clubs...

It's the most abused because it is by far the most prevalent. That's like saying a 2011 Honda Accord is a better car than a new Mercedes, because there are more of them on the road.

Absolutely.............Alcohol!! Been there done that. Last band I quit (other issues as well) was due to the BL/Keyboardist drinking and by the end of the night was so drunk, he couldn't play anymore leaving just me and the drummer to play alone for the last half hour!! I got sick of it. It is NOT professional. And I really don't care what anyone, including TB members, have to say defending the use of drink, drugs or whatever. It's NOT professional and I will have none of that.

I'd like to add.....venues should NOT sell drinks to the band while they are on the clock. I wouldn't but that's just my opinion. Do what you wanna do. Just not on my dime.

In my original band back in the 90s/early 2000s, we drank a lot. We were all in our 20s. I was no saint, but I knew when to call it a night. Cheap and easily available booze (plus other stuff, for the rest of the guys) contributed to the band's eventual downfall. Some of our board tapes from those days are embarrassing. And I was the only member that didn't end up in rehab.

When I gig now, I have one beer at the most. Sometimes nothing at all.
