20 Bass Shootout!

Hi!

In this clip I compare 20 basses playing the same riff. I'd very much appreciate your feedback and critique! Which bass did you like best/least?

Cheers!
Johan

The basses are:

1. Burns - Hank Marvin, Shadows Bass
2. ESP - Vintage Four J/P Bass
3. Gibson - Les Paul Bass, 2013
4. Yamaha - BB414 (signed by the great Marco Mendoza)
5. Ibanez - SR500
6. Fender - Jaguar, 2013
7. Fender - Jazz Bass, American Standard, 2014
8. Fender - Starcaster, 2013
9. Squire - 1951 P-Bass, Precision
10. Fender - P-Bass American Standard, 2014
11. Epiphone - Thunderbird, T-bird 2013
12. Gibson - RD Krist Novocelic, 2013
13. Gibson - EB13, 2013
14. Gretsch - Electromatic G5440SLB, 2013
15. Fender - P-Bass, Precision 1973
16. Gibson -Ripper, 1974
17. Gibson - Thunderbird, 2010
18. Gibson - EB2, 1965
19. Rickenbacker - 4003, 2013
20. Stagg - EB3, 1970s

In the next couple of days I will add another 6 clips/riffs to the playlist, to explore other styles of playing as well.

Funny, I saw your videos what seems like a long time ago:) I didn't know you were a TB member, do now. I got a kick out of the ships and water in the background, I enjoyed them (the old one I saw, I haven't clicked the new link you just put up yet).

Very cool!

The one that jumped out at me as the sound I love is the 51 p. It's thick and hairy like me!

Liked the 70s p too. Never heard a Yamaha BB before and always wondered how they sound and compare.

Really cool video

This was very interesting - thank you very much for putting this video together.
Although some may disagree, I don't think there was as much of a qualitative difference as they might have expected. A lot of us spend a lot of time on talkbass quibbling over small differences.
I also agree with others that the Ric was the champ - it simply had more of everything.

Thanks, Yeah differences lie mainly in the top end, which usually is covered up anyway. But they kinda encourage me to play different riffs and are quite different in that way. Cheers Johan

4. Yamaha - BB414
9. Squire - 1951 P-Bass (I just might have to buy one!)
10. Fender - P-Bass American Standard
11. Epiphone - Thunderbird
15. Fender - P-Bass
All sound pretty damned good, but number
18, the Gibson - EB2, 1965 sounded great!

By the way, one of the coolest youtube videos about bass guitars I've seen.

I just had to check out your video, and the other three, again today. I wish we were neighbors because I'd let you borrow my Epiphone Thunderbird Pro IV...sounds like an entirely different beast with D'addario flats...simply because I always thought the Epiphone Pro Classic was not entirely dissimilar to the Gibson Thunderbird in regards to the pickups, at least.
By the way, I'd love to hear you play a riff from this.

Thanks, yeah the Pro is the one with the chromed pups huh? I love that one. It's more like the original. Do you have any clips of it? aaah I'd sure like to be your neigbour too :-)

Cheers

The Pro is the one that looks like a cutting block...different colored stained wood. Active pickups, black hardware.
Some people say it doesn't sound as good as the Classic Pro. I guess I got one of the good ones because mine sounds great.
Haven't made a video for youtube. Maybe I should.

Interesting vid. Thanks. The three that align closest with my preferred tone in all 3 picking styles would be the Fender Jazz, the Ibanez (I usually dont care for em but it sounded nice and clanky and articulate) and Gibson Thunderbird. I still like more high end in my tone than I heard on there. but those make a great starting platform. I have a goofy taste in tone though. I love it super bright but with a fair amount down low as well and love the metallic sound of strings and such.
