2012 NHL Offseason Thread

Ah, that makes sense too. Less than a month to get a deal done for all those guys looking for a new deal or an extension. Hartnell just "belongs" in Philly, so I am glad they were able to keep him and he wanted to stay.

Always liked Hartnell.

As for Kovalev, I'm done with him. He's had an entire career's worth of excuses which usually are along the lines of "the coach doesn't like me." He's never owned up to underperforming or simply not showing up at all which, let's be honest, has been his M.O. for the longest time.

Instead of having a 1-year contract in the NHL, he opts for a 2-year KHL deal (his 2nd stint there) in which he gets a total of 5 points in 22 games. Now, he blames this on a bad knee which has been surgically repaired. ENOUGH!

This guy has the best hands of any player and an insane amount of talent but has never worked towards being a team guy. He's a cancer in the locker room, is now dreadfully slow, isn't physical enough to be relevant, and is too old to change his ways regardless of what he proclaims.

He says he has, at 40+ years of age, still another decade of hockey left in him. Maybe in a garage league, but not in the NHL.

Haha on Kovalev. I was cautiously excited when Shero made the deal for him two years ago. It took all of about two games for me to realize Kovalez wouldn't be returning to his glory days as a Pen. But I cut Shero some slack since he was really looking for bodies at the point he made the trade to get Kovalev. What's irritating is he still shows as being on the Penguins on the ESPN website.

Yeah, I had similar feelings. Initial optimism and then severe pessimism. The only thing I ever really remember him doing is falling down in front of the net, taking 15 seconds to stand back up, and magically finding the puck on his stick after standing back up and putting it in the net.

I was making a joke. Lately guys getting longer contracts in Philly with No Movement Clauses or No Trade Clauses in their contracts (Richards/Carter/Van Riemsdyk) wind up getting traded away and traded away early in the contracts. When the headline came out for Simmonds' contract making fun of players getting traded away on Yahoo, I pointed out about the NMC/NTC and the fact that Simmonds' contract didn't have one, hence he'll be around for the length of his contract. Hartnell got the NTC/NMC, therefore I postulated that he'll be gone before the second year of his contract. (Gosh, I get a migraine going and out comes a word like postulated???)

Postulate is a great word! Actually, all those you mention got traded just before the NMC/NTC clauses kicked in. NMC/NTC means just that, no movement or no trade (unless said contracted player agrees to the deal).

I'm with you guys, keeping Harts is fantastic. Great heart and soul guy and I imagine real strong in the locker room. Also, he really is a wicked passer when he manages to stay on his blades! #hartnelldown

Pretty good 2nd-line centerman. Doesn't have the talent or the offensive upside to be a 1st-line centerman, but a solid 2nd-liner.

In other news, the Sabres have a 30-million, 4-year deal on the table for Doan. We'll see if he goes for it.

The guy's 20. At 20, performing the way he does, not taking nights off, being easy to coach, and will be working in tandem with Eberle and Nudgent-Hopkins... these crazy 1st-round draft picks don't come often and the Oilers have had 3 (or 4?) of them in quick successions.

As a GM, you'd be nuts not to lock this kid up before the new CBA is in place.

That's not insane. What's insane is DiPietro's contract, Bryzgalov's contract, Lecavalier's, Kovalchuk's, Weber's, etc. Those are crazy contracts.

Here's a weird one...

KENORA, Ont. -- Police are asking for the public's help in locating the 1907 Stanley Cup Championship Banner.

Ontario Provincial Police say the banner was stolen from the Whitecap Pavilion in Kenora, Ont., sometime between Friday evening and Saturday morning.

The burgundy and white banner is about two metres long and a little under a metre wide.

The Kenora Thistles defeated the Montreal Wanderers to win the Stanley Cup in 1907.

Police say a Canadian flag and a Los Angeles Kings Stanley Cup flag were also stolen.

Anyone with information is asked to contact provincial police or Crime Stoppers.
