Not to mention all the little businesses that surround the arenas like restaurants, bars, parking, souvenir stores, etc.. those not affiliated sirectly with the team.

OW! New proposal from the owners is in, supposedly eventually getting to a 50-50 split of revenue but the HHR stream isn't listed. While the split is up from 46%, the HHR (hockey related revenue) definition deflated that original 46% number down to 43%. If the owners tinker with that HHR definition, it may not be 50-50 at all.

Also while they are not asking for the big salary rollbacks of 25% anymore, they are cutting the cap from the $70.2 mil back down to $58 mil. OUCH!!! 16 teams are currently over that number. Here's hoping there's a luxury tax included in this proposal.

Screw the luxury tax. Part of the reason the NBA is a joke (aside from the players, cheating referees, a specific commissioner's total inability to do anything useful, etc) is the fact that they have a ridiculous salary cap. What's the point in enven having a cap if every team can cheat it as they see fit?

On an aside, I don't see the owners crippling their teams by lowering the cap. I'm sure there will be exceptions for teams that are already over the cap limit.

Two more players jump in on extensions before the CBA expires, Eberle in Edmonton and Turris in Ottawa. In my opinion, good move by Ottawa to lock him up for a few years. Ottawa seems to be priming themselves for a few good years coming up. Getting Eberle signed is a big deal in Edmonton too, I think him and Hall are buddies. I think that mostly is it for Edmonton getting their younger guys signed to long term deals.

I'm trying to remember the last time an NHL player pulled the stunt of holding out over a contract dispute like how NFL players do about every year.

Hope you're kidding. This is a guy who puts himself above the team, who went public with his contractual issues rather than try to fix them behind closed doors, who dragged the entire team on for months with will-he/won't-he sign BS, and above all else, performed rather poorly once he played with Ottawa.

29 points in 55 games... which is a record for him! A total NHL experience of 75 points in 186 games. He's not physical and his work ethic has been questioned more than once.

And this entitled player who demonstrated little skill or determination is worth 3.5m/year? Not in my world...

Some teams have guys who are paid *less* than 2 million who provide as much offensively as he does.

It was a little kidding and a little serious. I know Turris has been a problem player to some degree, but I like how Ottawa is lining up for the future. It may signal the end of Gonchar in Ottawa, but I think he'll catch on somewhere else.
