2012 NHL Offseason Thread

I don't get how the NHLPA and owners can just sit around not negotiating a deal right now. The latest headline I saw was no new talks are scheduled. I suppose they could decide in the next few minutes to schedule talks, but why aren't they locked in a room somewhere right now working out a deal?

Gotta laugh at some of these:

Ville Leino - Buffalo Sabres - Sooooo glad Flyers refused to resign him. Flyers must have seen him benefitting frmo his linemates and Sabres did not.

Jay-Bo - Calgary Flames - Glad the Flyers did NOT sign him as he was on their radar for a while. What a bust!

Jaromir Jagr - Dallas Stars - Hasn't even played a game in Dallas yet and he's on this list!!! :D

Scottie Upshall - Florida Panthers - Former Flyer on a horrible contract just to get the Panthers to the floor. Proof the cap hurts the NHL for paying for this.

Mike Richards - LA Kings - Nice seeing him get busted on for his dropping point total since he signed that albatross contract.

Scott Gomez - Montreal Canadiens - enough said. At least the "how long has it been since Scott Gomex scored a goal clock" reset once last season. :rollno:

Shea Weber - Nashville Predators - Well, at least this one's on Nashville

Rick DiPietro - NY Islanders - forever one of the worst.

Ilya Bryzgalov - Philadelphia Flyers - I'm on the fence on this one pending this year's results. Going from Pho to Phi ios a humungous adjustment.

I think you're the last one on the fence about Brygalov. After this past playoffs, he showed what he's worth. Not much. I wonder though if the Weber deal in PHI worked out, what would have been picked as the worst between those two.

Weird how that list is littered with so many Flyers.

Words cannot explain how excited I am that this decision was fast-tracked thanks to Milan Hejduk.
"It was a great experience," said Hejduk, who will return for a 14th NHL season, all with Colorado. "I really enjoyed it. It was such an honor. But my role changed a little bit on the team and I felt the captain should be someone with a significant role, someone who is on the top two lines, which I was not last year. It kind of feels weird when you’re playing on the third or fourth line and you’re captain. It didn’t feel right.

"I think Gabe is a great choice. He’s young, but the older guys on the team will help him. I believe he’s going to be here for a long time and he’s going to be captain for a long, long time. I feel really comfortable about this."

Marchand gets four years, $18,000,000. Seems like the going rate for guys like him, maybe a little on the bargain side for Boston. Supposedly a deal for Seguin is about done as well.

Not much going on in Pittsburgh, so I had to dig through the "local to me" news.

Burke takes shot at ESPN

In response to ESPN ranking the Toronto Maple Leafs 122 out of 122 franchises in the four major sports, Leafs GM Brian Burke fired back during an interview with the National Post Monday.

“I don’t think ESPN knows a single thing about hockey," Burke said. "I think their hockey coverage stinks. I don’t think they know anything about Canada. I don’t think they know anything about hockey.”

I remember someone on these very pages claiming that Bryzgolov was going to be Bryzchokeoff in the playoffs. He couldn't handle the "pressure" in PHO, the year before. I remember how easily the Wings solved his "invincibility" in the first round in 10, and how easily he got rattled. Could he turn it around, perhaps in a town without rabid hockey fans, but not in a PHI or DET for that matter. He needs to go somewhere where's there's no pressure, you know an eight seed like the LA Kings. :D

Sadly the Wings didn't really make he list because they haven't done anything. Sorry but Kyle Quincy isn't perfect, but he isn't even top ten material when it comes to bad contracts. But even more sadly the Wings without Lidstrom have just as good a chance of making a run (especially with a deadline deal) as anyone. No one can convince me that the LA Kings of last year are a dynasty and are any better than Philly, NY, Pitt, Nash, San Jose, Boston, Chicago, or Detroit. Welcome to parity, IF we have a season. :eyebrow:

I seriously think Bryzgalov will make the adjustment in Phialdelphia. The guy jus had no clue what he was getting into. No one can even begin to guess what that Philadelphia media and fanbase is like until they live in it. I just think Bryzgalov is whacked in the head enough that he is going to mentally put himself in a place where Philly isn't going to get to him. He just seems the type.

Plus he lost 8 pounds in the offseason, unlike Dustin Byfuglien. (If you haven't seen pics of him lately... whoa boy!)
