I didn't watch the game, but saw enough of the high(low) lights. Thornton was wrong, knows he was wrong and will serve a suspension. There is no defense for his actions. He snapped, it happens. I snapped in a high school football game once and yanked a guy down with a blatant facemask, it is not something that anyone would have though I was capable of, nor is it something that I am proud of, but it happened. I hope I'm the only one on this board who has done something inexplicably bad/stupid/regretable, but I suspect that I am not alone.

That said, had Orpik followed the Code and fought Thornton when challenged earlier, taken a few lumps maybe got a few himself, then the matter is settled and over. Maybe then the game takes on a better tenor and Neil doesn't think he can get away with kneeing someone in the head if he sees Orpik takes his lumps.

The Code will die, not as old school enforcers have lapses as the yahoo writer contents, rather it will die if enough players like Orpik chose not to follow it. Then enforcement become solely the purview of the officials and the league. Based on comments on this thread about the league and officiating, I wouldn't be so sure that would be a better outcome for player safety. I try to be careful about what I wish for, on the offchance that I actually get my wish.

Oh god, the code? Lol. So a top line 20+ minute defensemen is supposed to fight a fourth line goon because he takes offense to a hit that is at the most barely a two minute interference call? Why, so he can be off the ice for 5 minutes while we already have two other top 4 D men out with injuries? Give me a break. Victim blaming at its finest.

It is certainly allowed, my comment was not intented to blame the victim, although i understand how it could be interpreted that way. It was to descibe an alternate outcome should orpik had decided to engage.

The alternative is that non-fighters have only an occasional 2 minute penalty and perhaps inconsistent league discipline after the fact as disincentive to staying the good side on the line? I don't think that is enough. Call me a cynic, I don't have that much faith in nuns, let alone hockey players.

Maybe what I am saying is that if the code disappears, you are as likely to see the league start to eliminate hard hits that are currently legal and before you know it you have the NFL.

I say kick Boston and Pittsburgh out of the NHL. That'll learn 'em both...

In all seriousness, Neal's suspension is weak and should've been doubled.

As for what happened to Orpik, I don't think it was a Bertuzzi type situation, but a long suspension is needed.

If the league really wanted to make it clear that this nonsense will not be tolerated, Kessel, Scott, Neal, Thornton, etc. would all have landed major suspensions.

I'm all for big hits and fights, but this crap is a joke.

Did anyone else see the goal from Corey Perry last night in the Isles game? He got tripped, managed to get to his knees, and get a shot off that found it's way past two Islanders for the goal. Impressive for sure.
