2013 Ampeg V-4B 100W Reissue Pt2

V4B preamp tube positions/functions

Need a little help on what role the V4 tube plays? I think I have the rest of them nailed down, but can't be 100% sure.

V1= ECC83S = 12AX7
V2= ECC83S = 12AX7
V3= ECC83S = 12AX7
V4= ECC82 = 12AU7

Here is the signal path Joe:

The input jacks connect to V1B gain stage -> gain potentiometer, ultra lo ultra hi tone circuits -> V1A -> treble and bass circuits -> V2B -> midrange, midrange select, master volume -> V2A -> preamp out, balanced out, slave out.

Power amp in V3A -> V3B phase inverter -> V4A and V4B driver for each pair of push pull power tubes -> two pairs of 6L6GC power tubes.

The 12AU7 has more current driving capacity that the 12AX7 does so that is why they use it here.
If you can use a 12AU7 tube with balanced triodes, the amp could be a little quieter but it isn't required.
If you have the option, a low noise tube will help in V1. This will help the amp to be quieter.

If you can, push it through the back. It is there fastened by a velcro in each corner. Just give it a little push.

Thanks - I had to push with much more force than I would have thought. The wood bowed outwards quite alarmingly before it came loose. I don't know what was up with mine, but the grill is finally free.

I'm considering doing something sacrilegious and replacing the grill cloth with Fender cloth, if only to match my Barefaced cab...

Sometimes you think that you're going to break something, you have to push so hard. If it slips off the frame it can go right through the cloth pretty easily.

I use metal or wood dowels to pop these sort of frames.

On the back of the V4B Reissue they have position V3 listed as a 12AU7 and position V4 as 12AX7. That is the order I have mine in...do I have it wrong? Should the V4 position be the 12AU7? If so, I've been running a 12AX7 in that position in error? Looking for your guidance here to help get it right.

Thank you.

I see where the confusion is coming from. Follow the order that is on the labels on the amp chassis for placing the tubes.

The schematic indicates that V4 is the 12AU7. It is the last small signal tube before the 6L6GC tubes. It makes sense that the 12AU7 is V4 as the schematic shows. V1 to V4 are labeled in order of signal flow on the schematic.

On the back of the amp they label the tubes 12AX7 12AX7 12AU7 12AX7 because that's how they are physically laid out. The order of the tubes on a chassis is not necessarily V1, V2, V3, and V4. People call the first tube V1 but it isn't always on some amps.

If you want to prove it to yourself, the circuit board has labels silk screened onto it. You can look and see what the labeling is on the board and how this corresponds to the tube that is in the socket.

If you contact Loud and provide your serial number, they will email you a copy of the schematic.

Yeah, that's great info there, thanks so much *beans-on-toast *(had that for breakfast yesterday in an Austin café; my beans were refried w/huevos rancheros.) :)

And I guess I can't catch a break with Ampegs' use of Velcro. I received my new 112AV cab last week. As I unpacked it from the box and pulled the plastic bag off it; doink..front cloth grill fell onto my floor. Upon investigation, there is no Velcro on the cab side. Just Velcro on the grill part but none on any corner of the inside of cab.

I called to ask if Sweetwater would send me the Velcro to install myself; they wana ship me a whole new cab and have me send this one back. No charge to me for ship of course; just a slight time hassle. Guess I could buy Velcro and just fix it myself. But now I will have a couple weeks to return the first 112AV. Second 112AV will arrive this week.

Soooo..at least I get a chance to listen to two 112AV's for awhile before I return the un-velcroed cab.

And to stay OT, will use my V-4B for this soundcheck. But can't imagine it will be much sweeter than the 212AV cab I already love with the V-4B.

Yarr, rig looks awesome and sounds awesome-er thru headphones just now. Glad to see this, thanks Bbass.

I missed Tweedy's performance last nite as I got distracted from J. Fallons' show while watching Billy Idol performing his new "pop-rock-ish" tune on J. Kimmel's show instead. :meh:

I'm on the fence about picking up a V4-B reissue (or a CTM-100) and a pair of 212AV cabs, ErnieD mentioned about using a 112AV with a 212AV....being I assume all 3 speakers would be 8 ohms, I take it there would be no problem with doing this (unlike running a 4x10 and 1x15) based on they would all be getting the same power, is this true?
Being it's a weird total ohm rating what ohm setting would you use on the amp 4 or 8?
I think those 2 cabs would look kind of retro cool together compared to two 212AVs!
Another question being you can pick up nice 810 ampegs cabs so cheap used sometimes, will a V4-B drive these cabs pretty well or would the 212AVs be a better choice.
Actually same question about the 610hlf, just found a super clean for a real good price. How would it stack up to a 810 or 2 212 loudness wise.
thanks ed

The 610hlf is pretty good loudness wise. Not quite to the level of the 810e but not far off.

Now the happy owner of a v4b reissue! After a full band practice last night I am sold on the amp. The tone and volume was spot on all night. I thought the eq, though simple, really allowed me to dial in a few different tones quickly and kept me in the sweet spot in the mix.

I ran the amp with a bag end s18bd and s15bd with the ports sealed. Big thumbs up for vintage, tube, sealed cab goodness!
