Outstanding! I've been accused of many worse things in life, so I'll take the blame on this one. :)

I'm really curious to see how the chocolate finish looks. Please post some good pics here upon arrival, loendmaestro.

Early this September, I was trying to see if there were any still available. One of the guys at the Sam Ash store here in Vegas called a contact of his at Gibson; the word he got was that all the current run of leftys had gone out, but that "Gibson is seriously considering another run in early 2014".
At that time Sam Ash had sold the last one in stock, anywhere, the day before (story of my life :rollno:). There must have been some still in the pipeline, though; I checked again 2 weeks ago, on a whim, and managed to snag one from the store in Canoga Park, Ca. There was also one in New Jersey; might pay to check with them muy pronto. :D

The SG Special's nut width is 1 5/8" (the same as a P-bass, IIRC). The thickness of the neck at the first fret (measured as the distance from the back of the neck to the surface of the fretboard) is slightly more than 3/4", and is equal to the thickness of the neck on my Jazz bass.

While I don't have a Precision bass to do a hands-on comparison, I imagine that the neck profiles are very close.

I played an EB-0 in junior high school and high school jazz band.
I do not understand why the EB-3L was not reissued? I offered the Gibson custom shop a very large amount of money for re-issue EB-1L and they were not interested.
What is Gibson thinking? Next we will see automatic tuners on an "SG Bass".
Jack Bruce has to be turning over in his grave-well maybe not yet! :)
Anyway Gibson may have got the Les Paul GT Bass right? I'll let everyone know after I fire my new one up next week.

Actually, 1 5/8" is approximately 1.625". Gibson specs the nut on this bass @ 1.6".

A standard Fender Jazz bass is spec'd @ .77" at the first fret. So the Gibson may be in my future.

The issue there is that the pickup in Mel's bass was an original "mudbucker", and those are wound to about 30k. The neck pickup in the modern SG bass is, as far as I'm aware, unless they've redesigned it this model year, the TB (Thunderbird) humbucker underneath the big cover. They sound good, but not the same as the originals. You can buy correct replacements (Curtis Novak makes one). So you could probably get some similarities, given they're both humbuckers, but it won't "nail" the Mel tone.

They told me I got the last one and of course charged me for it. Then after three days of me calling asking why it hadn't shipped yet they were like "Oh yeah, uh...we don't have it anymore."

And when were you going to tell me that exactly?! My first and last Sam Ash order.

Sweetwater beat the good price I got from them and supposedly its on the Fed Ex truck now. I'm hoping to have it by the weekend.
