i hate that 120th anniversary inlay.
they force it on you, 120 years is no big deal, nobody cares enough to ask anyway, and it's not exactly going to be particularly collectable.
least you can buy a t-bird in the original colour that doesn't have it.

from the price they ask, to the way they won't do anything new, to the method by which they market their products. they are their own biggest fans.

Not to sideline this thread too much, but it irks me the way that Gibson proclaims the 120th anniversary when the company did not start in 1894. Gibson was incorporated in 1902. No one knows what Orville Gibson was doing in 1894, but he certainly hadn't started his own company. That's my rant for the month.

But seeing you with anything other than a TBird over your shoulder is going to really freak me out!
I have it on good authority that the entire 2014 range of basses (and guitars) will be available left-handed, with all colours same as rightys. However, Gibson is horrible at sharing this information; there's not a word on their website about it.
If you want a left-handed T-bass cheaper than a Gibson, you can always get a Gaskell.

After my initial exposure to the 2014 SG Special at Guitar Center some weeks ago, I've been following this thread in earnest to see more about that awesome Chocolate SG. I put in the order and finally picked it up today, loving the feel of the new model. Cheggit out:
The satin finish feels awesome, very natural and I'm looking forward to seeing how it ages. As with most EB-0/3 and SG models, neck dive is pretty substantial but not much of a bother for me. Sound is incredible, nice and beefy but clearer than past models I've experienced. I would have picked a different color for the case interior, but aesthetics aside, the case does feel a bit on the cheap side. Otherwise the bass is really a pleasure, and you can't beat the price point!

And I must mention that setup was near perfect out of the box – just needed some intonation adjustment and pup screw tightening after shipping. I foresee a slight truss rod adjustment in the near future, some bowing is starting to show now that I'm up to tune in normal temps, but really if Gibson has QC issues I'm not seeing it on this bass.
Every company has some defects out there. I have three Gibsons, an 11,12 and 13 and QC is fine on all three. I think some of the Gibson bashing is just BS that people keep repeating (muddy sound is something based on decades old instruments) and the fact that people are not used to seeing a nitro finish so they assume that a thick poly is a good thing. The neck dive on my SG is a legitimate issue but is a design issue rather than a QC issue.
Obviously I have settled on Gibson as it is a good fit for me. I have been playing for 35 years and have had a dozen or more basses and guitars during that time and the Gibson's have just fit me the best. I prefer the short scale and there are not a lot of companies that make SS in the US. I like the tone, have no problem with the three point bridge, and have no problem playing either the SG or Flying V sitting down. The Flying V does not have neck dive and while the SG does it is not a problem for me as I never have my fret hand off of the neck when I play. The bottom line is that Gibson's are not Fenders and do not try to be. Some people simply can't wrap there mind around the fact that different does not = bad it is simply a different flavor. I can't wrap my head around why everyone would want to sound and look the same.

I saw one of the new SG Special basses at Guitar Center today (fireburst!) and pulled the trigger on it. Will post some pics ASAP.
I've been playing an SG Standard Bass for a few years. Great choice and you will love it. The 30" scale grows on you. It is now my go to bass for most gigs.
