2015 Schecter J Bass. A worthy alternative!

Just bought the Schecter Diamond J5 in the classifieds. I was a little hesitant because of the brand name. I was actually going to purchase a DJ5 for the 2nd time but this bass got my attention.

Here is a small review. Its kind of a Lakland DJ5 crossed with a Fender american deluxe. Neck profile is very similar to a DJ5. String spacing 18mm American deluxe. 35" scale B string is defined, with balanced string tension across all strings. Body cut aways are nice. Usually I like a undersized body but this one is surprisingly comfy. 18v preamp is a surprise. I'm not really floored by it but it's nice. I think a J Retro belongs in every jazz bass so I'm kinda spoiled. No neck dive and under 10lbs.

This thing nails the Jazz bass on steroids. In the past, I have had to spend money modding basses to have them sound this good. The quality is just as good as the Lakland Skylines or better. Dollar for Dollar best money I ever spent on a jazz bass.

Awesome...I said it before. This is one of the best on the market for the under 2k range and it's just 800.

The biggest sleeper out there. This is coming from a Lull guy.

It's not a Lull but it's a good Jazz bass.

I figured that out the hard way! I tried putting a set of Ken Smith tapercores on it, only to realize the B fell short. I'm not sure if they would've worked if they weren't silk wrapped. But im sure there's a taper at that end too, in which case, they still wouldn't have worked.
So, I put them on my other 5'er, and bingo!! Love the sound and feel of them BTW. Especially as they've aged. I wish they sold half-flat taper core strings. I'm not a huge fan of really bright strings.

So I've been considering the Schecter Diamond J5 Plus vs the Sire V7 5-string - both seem to have very good reviews. I own a Schecter Stiletto Studio 6 and love it. My two hesitations -- on the DJ5 Plus, I've heard some review videos with VERY BAD fret buzz; on the Sire, I'm worried about a 34" scale for that B string and also no way to play before you buy. Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks.

Great question and I happen to own both the Sire V7 w/maple neck and the DJ plus 5, w/rosewood neck. I am REALLY! impressed with the sound of both. It's true their sound/tone will compete with basses 3x's in value as stated by many other TBer's. Either bass can serve as a stand alone without a backup. Both have great sounding "B" strings with good quality preamps and pickups. It's true that the DJ5 plus has a hotter output because of its Pickups design, but they are manageable, especially with some compression. I believe the construction on both are solid but I like the feel and neck length of the DJ5+ a bit better, along with its vintage hardware. The Sire Preamp is clean and more versatile with better frequency response and/or more tone shaping. Both are well designed without any need for modding. However, as a Big fan of Mr. Marcus Miller, I just had to replace the Sire bridge with a BadAss V and I really liked the tone change. So, If it's tone shaping you want then go with Sire. For quality in construction the DJ5+. I will never part with either bass. Hope this helps!
