Double Bass 2024 Spirocore challenge

What about a S36s (4/4 solo A) string? More importantly... How does one break a spirocore‽

I get so lazy when I change a bunch of strings back and forth and back and forth that I often use a power drill with a slotted end to fit over tuners. In this case, I think I just was cranking it up to tension (way) too fast instead of easing into it. It was dumb, no doubt. I’ll try that solo A - thanks!

Question for the spirocore brain trust. Has anyone used a Mittel E and A with a Weich D and G? I have used the Mittel E with the rest of the Weich strings and love that setup. I have a dead Mittel set that sounds great, my right hand just taps out after about 3 hours so I put on some 3 year old weichs. Is the Mittel A worth the trouble?

I've done it, but ultimately felt that a full set of mediums or weichs created a more even feel to the strings. so to me if you really like the mitt E/A then do the same for the D/G.

I swapped out my Zyex G for a spirocore weich G about a month ago. It sounds great now. My setup is the Mitt E and the rest weich, not sure which length. Anyway, last night I played in a good corner with a bluegrass band and man did I feel the power.

The arco is going great too, especially since I got a new cake of Pops.

Came from 3885 weichs back in December, and I found them unbearable...too stiff and brite AF. Two weeks ago I mounted my old S42 mitt E&A with Super flex D&G on top. The SF's are really brite and scratchy on my bass (42-3/8"). My bass is Brite and loud and loves any E-string I put on it, but has a nasty wide wolf from Ab-Bb. Stiffer A-strings exacerbate the wolf.

S42 weich set seemed best on this bass so far from the spiro family. I'll prolly reinstall those next week, but I'm looking for something darker that sings like spirocore. Should I try S42 solo at orchestra pitch? Do they make 3885 solos?

Anybody wanna trade me your solos for my 3885 weichs?

They do make 3885 ( 3/4) solos, the G and D match very nice with S42 Weich A E

Yes, what @Jmilitsc said. Kind of a new electric bass string sound.

A while after my earlier post, the idea to detune the string and bring it back up to pitch crossed my mind. I dropped it by about a step/step & a half and when I brought it back up, it seemed to remove about 90% of what I was hearing. I guess that’s kind of the bass string equivalent of “unplug it and plug it back in again.”

It has been about 2 months now and my 3885 Weichs are only sounding better as each one settles in. Yes the D does some vibing sounds if you are really are pushing it, and sometimes the G too. But better that than being dead, as simple right hand technique can control it. I just wish the E and A still had those fabulous overtones like they did the first 3 days!
