What I like is the fairly extreme variations in the 60’s on Fender instruments The uniqueness of each instrument depending on who painted it and on what day of the week. I think one could argue that starting in the 80’s, maybe even a little earlier, Fender became much more consistent with their burst finishes and they varied less than in the 60’s in particular.
My examples are, side by side 66’ and 64’ P-Basses. I love how the burst goes all the way up on the horn of the 66’ (L).

And look at the same 64’ next to a 70’ fretless (great burst on the 70’).

And lighting makes a difference too. This is the same 64’ with less light on the subject.

Anyway, I like Three tome sunburst most of the time…unless your talking Sienna Sunburst!

call me controversial, but the best bursts are the early mid 60s to late 60s target bursts on fenders. they just seem like something you’d want to see in a music shop as a kid.

I think the colour boundaries in what you posted are too soft for targetburst...

If we’re talking Fender & Gibson finishes, I’m firmly in the three tone sunburst camp. Never cared for their two tone sunbursts

One of my favourite two-tone-ish bursts these days is G&Ls Old School sunburst.

I like both bursts but prefer a deep brown with a longer fade yellow on 2TSB and a subtle long gradation on 3TSB with a smallish center section. No Clownbursts.

Agree. The "in between" color in 3 tone bursts always stands out like a sore thumb to me.
