I prefer 3 tone sunburst through and through. This is my number one right here and to me the bright red and golden yellow are the best colors for it. I never have liked the look of 2 tone or tobacco bursts, just ugly but I respect other people who like it.

I like them both. Some very nice three tones were done by Gibson and Peavey in the 70's and 80's are my all time favorites.

I grew up with 3 tone, first and main bass I played for years was 3 tone precision. For me, that is THE look of sunburst.

Note - mine was 3 tone maple board.... which IMHO is THE look. I don't get the well liked comment someone made about maple = 2 tone and rosewood = 3 tone. 3 tone maple is the true classic that I saw everywhere in the 80s (1970s precisions in the 80s... probably the most common basses around at that time).

Subjectively - cool, I think anyone can like one over the other. I just mean as far as what I saw around me always, growing up playing bass. Doesn't make it right or better LoL, just makes it the standard by which all others are judged, for my memory.

Would my L2K be considered two tone sunburst or does that small area bleeding between the gold and the black make it three tone? Either way, it has just grown on my over the year and a half I've owned. Now if I could just get the neck to behave.

I like 3 tone as long as the red band isn't too wide, and I like 2 tone as long as the black isn't too wide or thin and the second color isn't dull and depressing looking.

That’s an ‘81 Ibanez Roadster RS924 the first vintage Ibanez I ever got. I’ve never looked back…

… but if you look back a few posts, you’ll see one in a two tone sunburst!

@Standalone Niiiice. 80s Ibbys kick butt. I recently snagged a 1988 Japanese-made Soundgear, in a trade, that's in practically mint condition. It seems to want to dethrone my #1. Excellent bass.
