I grew up with 3 tone, first and main bass I played for years was 3 tone precision. For me, that is THE look of sunburst.
Note - mine was 3 tone maple board.... which IMHO is THE look. I don't get the well liked comment someone made about maple = 2 tone and rosewood = 3 tone. 3 tone maple is the true classic that I saw everywhere in the 80s (1970s precisions in the 80s... probably the most common basses around at that time).
Subjectively - cool, I think anyone can like one over the other. I just mean as far as what I saw around me always, growing up playing bass. Doesn't make it right or better LoL, just makes it the standard by which all others are judged, for my memory.
