2x 210 or 210+115 cabinets

Digital's humor is dry, but I don't see that as trolling. He actually makes a point in that last post....you do not.

Digital humor does lack the nuances of true interpersonal speech, where inflection and body language have a huge impact. That part I agree with you on. However, where he says

Just pointing out that it's not matched for the sake of being consistent with our use of science. People who stand on science to make recommendations shouldn't be able to cherry pick when to apply it. ... falls into the category of the interaction of the unknown from which science purists purport to save us from.

That doesn't argue a point in favor or against matching cabs. It simply attempts to derail the thread with a reductio ad adsurdum argument. This adds nothing to the discussion, and in fact threatens to derail it, so it's trolling in my book.

I am pointing out the inconsistency applied to this particular topic. The focus upon which has been disproportionate, and the vitriol which has accompanied it has been excessive. No need to be personal.

One additional point - there have been many folks who incorrectly believe that is they have a 2x10 that they can assume be adding another 2x10 they are "safe". This is the result of focusing the argument on mismatched driver sizes, when in truth the issue is about difference is phase response. One 2x10 cab can be as different in phase response from another 2x10 cab as a 1x15 or any other enclosure can. It's the phase response of the system that ultimately matters - not the disparity in driver sizes. You can have two different 2x10's that interact more destructively than a 2x10 and a 1x15. Including science into a conversation is an all or nothing proposition. From my observation this point is not often made as clearly as it could be.

WTH are you on about. OP was asking about buying another identical 210 or a 115 and has been recommended 210 for the stated benefits. You decided to query this popular choice for the greater good of knowledge and i am sure by now, you should have your query answered although it does seem like you are still around arguing a point just for the sake of it.

Plain and simple 210+115 / 210+210 of same make and model works although 2x210 has more benefits due to increased height as well as uniform driver size. This becomes redundant when mixing make/model. Increased chance of mismatch issues. And we already know 410+115 is BS.

Ultimately, choice is up to the individual.

... My point is only illustrative. I'm sure that it doesn't warp a hole in the fabric of space and time, unless you play a flat 5th off of C#, in which case all bets are off.

Well I thought the last bit was funny – even without interpersonal speech, inflection and body language cues, it was funny. Mind, I find C# funny, due to a mishap at a jam with friends. Now all anybody has to say is "C#" and we crack up.

Some people like to split hairs, DigitalMan is splitting atoms. I don't think it was trolling and as far as I'm concerned it was still on topic. I thoroughly enjoyed his thread contributions here, just as much as I enjoyed cchorney's rig. All good in my book.

Science hasn't explained why some people enjoy Durian (a pungent fruit) and others such as myself detest it. Science hasn't explained "love", though it may wax about pheromones, laws of attraction, DNA etc, it still can't explain Love.

OP!
TRUST YOUR EARS!
Get what you'll love hearing, be it a "2 x 210" or "210 + 115".

I didn't see anything in Digital's responses that indicated he was looking for trouble. The term "troll" is often misapplied when there is a perceived slight - likewise when a post response is made by someone who, up until that point, has been just reading the thread (like yours truly).
Digital's comments regarding the unknown and fluid variables are on point. Bob Ross referred to "happy accidents" in painting. If it works for you, then it works.

It's good to have issues like this talked about. The more people know about the advantages of pairing identical cabs the better.

I agree BUT do we HAVE to have the seminar every few days? There IS, believe it or not, a search function. :)

To answer the OP, you say that you love the sound of the 2x10 so why add an uncertainty factor by adding something different?? A pair of identical cabinets will just give you more af what you love. As for physically putting them together, my avatar shows that I am biased on the subject. :D

I guess you can tell where I stand on this.

Except Digital wasn't replying to the OP. He was talking about a pic on page two.

I use a 210 on top of a 115 and I like the sound I get. But my 210 is 16 Ohms and the 115 is 8 Ohms so the 210 is responsible for mids and upwards only. Just sayin it CAN sound good, but the safe way would be "get another 210, stack vertically!"

Many have and will say to get another matching 2x10 however I have heard the 2x10+1x15 combo is alright too but like with anything it's one of those "acquired" sounds/tones. I am sort of in the same boat with my 2x10 combo and if there ever comes a time I would need to add another cab to it would it/should it be a 2x10 or 1x15.

How does the 210 know it's responsible for the highs? Are you bi-amping? Are you determining the x-over frequency yourself (if so, what is the freq)? Which cabs are they? Are both boxes (all the drivers) full-range? Or did you build them yourself with drivers specifically chosen for bi-amping (if that's what you're doing)? If so, which 10s & which 15 did you pick?

Anxious to know.

it was all "use whatcha got" and it works out pretty nice!

Hartke TP115, 90ltrs vented, tuned to 51htz, with an emi delta 15a (8 ohm)
(measured the inner dimensions and the ports and WinISD said 51htz)
Hartke TP210, 50 ltrs, sealed, with a pair of Emi Beta 10a (wired in series to 16 ohm)
Both are used fullrange

The 115 on its own lacks a bit of high mids and highs whereas the 210 lacks lowend. together they sound really really good! I was amazed! I had the betas and the delta lying around and the cabs (both bought without the drivers for cheeeeaaap) and it came out very very nice!

I'll add a 4/16 ohm switch to the 210 so I can use it standalone for jamsessions and so on and maybe add a tweeter with l-pad to the 15 if I can only bring one cab.

I hear ya Paul. I wouldn't have made that comment if I had know what a $h!t hurricane was about to follow.
