2x8 cabs?

I mentioned further up in the thread -- I have a TC, and price was the deciding factor. It didn't seem like the Elf could be twice as good as the TC. And as I said, I'm plenty happy with the TC, and cost is figuring in to that evaluation as well.

I thought I read that the drivers in the TC are Turbosound, but I may be confused about that.

Maybe - I read some where they were Eminence. They still are cheaper in price than the elf.

Always listen before you buy!
This was my own little personal pandemic reward that I ordered immediately after lockdown. I'm not the biggest fan in the world of GC, but their return policy sure makes it easy to do business there--I planned to return it if I didn't like it. I auditioned the Elf when it first came out and liked it well enough, but when it came time to plunk down the frogskins, I chose the TC. If I was going to use them in a more demanding scenario, I might have given more consideration to the Elf, but more likely would have gone with LDS.

You are correct - and my GC is no longer carrying the ELF and TC stuff in the store. So you have to order it first just to hear it.

Like I said earlier I had both the ELF and now the TC. Here is a pic of the ELF 2x8 and the 1x10's with the TC Thrust 250 and again the TC with the GK.

I'm also looking at the TC Thrust BQ500 for a second head (to my D800). It seems odd to me that the 500 is less $ than their 250. The BH250 adds the TonePrint, and the tuner, but the 500 has a compressor. Again, I'm undecided about the heads too.

Does your Thrust 250 have the compressor? If so, how do you like it?

From what I understand, all the thrust amps have the compressor in them. But I only used compression with My Rob Allen bass, so I really do not have much experience with that. But I sold the thrust and picked up the GK200.

I started playing bass over 45 years ago and we did not have stuff like that then. I have never got used to pedals - but like I said I do like and use the EBS compressor but with my Rob Allen.

There is a post here some where on the ELF verse the Thrust. And all the people say they like the fact that the thrust - you can control the compressor. And the ELF is automatic.

For me - that is why I like the GK200 and the Rumble amps - mostly basic amps (bass, mid, treble and vol/gain) and nothing else. However, my rumble has the distortion channel - which I have never used.

Sorry I can not be much help for you on that feature.

I think (actually I know) that the JBL 116H-2 driver used in the 4408 cabinet is very much unsuited to bass guitar for a couple of reasons... the first being the sensitivity which is about 88dB/1W/1M. This is the unfortunate trade-off that is necessary to reproduce the low frequency extension, and requires ~8 times the power to achieve the same SPL as a more conventionally voiced driver for bass guitar applications. The second reason is that the mid frequency voicing (which is critical for bass guitar) is not well suited (another trade-off for low end extension)…..

My old school JBL L19's have the 116A. They sound wonderful with recorded music, in my dining room... I would not expect them to do well as a bass guitar cabinet. Thanks aged, for sharing the science as to why...

If you like red, there is the Proamp N208 from Italy: Proamp Italy - N208 - 600 W RMS 1200 W Handling Ultra Light Bass Cabinet with 2 8" Speakers

Or if you like blue, check out the Revsound RS28V: RS28V | RevSound

Here's my RS28 in blue:

I have gigged with a 2x8 for years, an Ashdown boxter. I've been very happy with it in all sorts of different ensembles. I recommend getting whichever 2x8 you choose either pointed at your head with a tilt, or up at chest level though. In small gigs, I've been able to carry the whole bass load with it...but most of the time I'm running a line out to the house and it is only carrying stage duty.

They sure are great sounding 8 inch woofers, but I've already had to re-foam mine once...as have most folks.

Pretty sure that I'd turn the cones inside-out if I tried to use the 4408's for gigs, or even rehearsals.

My earlier comments about them was only to highlight the fact that you can make a fairly compact 8 inch cabinet sound mighty good at bass frequencies. When you try to get the kind of efficiency we are used to, and the handling capacity we need...well, that's why we have purpose-built bass guitar speakers.

Well, thanks VERY much for all the feedback from everyone!!! I've learned a lot...which was the goal.
The budget finally won-out, and I just placed the order for the TC BH250 head, and a pair of TC 208 cabs.
Hope I won't regret this. Chris at Sweetwater cut me a very good deal on the package.
The cabs are unfortunately out of stock just about everywhere, so I have to wait till June to find out what the TC 208 cabs sound like. Chris told me that of the 130 of those TC cabs they've sold, they've never had a single one returned. I guess that's a pretty good sign.

I was REALLY drawn to the Revsound RS28V cabs, but the boss put the hammer down on the budget. I would have needed to use the Mesa D800 head with two of those anyway to drive the 2 ohm load...which is fine, but the goal was to have a gig-bag fit-able head. The D800 is a little big and heavy for that...but it does come with a nice case of it's own. The BH250 will be a good back-up head to have a long at bigger gigs with the Mesa rig, just in case someone pours a Jack & Coke into my amp head...again. (last time with a Dual Showman head...MUCH smoke!)

Thanks again, it's been very enlightening! TalkBass is really an awesome place!

I recently picked up this GRBass 2x8 4ohm cab from Bass Emporium. It was one of their older 2019 NAMM demos. They have a new carbon fiber series, which is insanely light - however, this is wonderfully covered in (love it or hate it) rat fur... That aside, this cab is amazing! Big full sound, deep, and loud. My original intention was to downsize a little from my current setup and I ended up with such a great sounding rig.

I have taken the GK 200/TC 2x8 combo and put them on top of the ELF 2x8. Sounds really full this combination, however I do not think it sounds as good with the cabinet switched.
