i was wondering what you guys thought the best 3-500$ head would be. i was looking at a gk 400rb IV, ampeg b2re, or peavey tour 450. just wondering what you guys thought was the most bang for the buck.

Not sure if it is the most bang for the buck, but I tried almost every $400-1000 head recently and ended up buying the Ampeg B2RE.
It is a great sounding head and when paired with my Ampeg 2x10 and 1x15 cabs, it is crazy loud (and sounds great at high volume).
BTW, I have a brand new Carvin BX600 head and the Ampeg is better. Not tons better, but noticably better IMO.

There are also many used older heads that pop up from time to time that may be worth researching.
The Carvin B800 seems like the best bang for the buck to me.
500 watts @ 4 ohms and 800 watts @ 2 ohms. $349.00
The Peavey Tour heads 450 / 700 seem nice. I have played through them several times at Gc and I like them. They depart from the over built designs of previous Peavey heads but offer a lot of features for the money. The 700 seems like the best deal at $559.00. You could probably deal with the sales guy at GC to get it for less.
I have never thought of anything Ampeg as a" good deal for the money" type of head. I think they are over priced and lack features that you could get on a less expensive head with more power. Not that they are bad. Just not a good deal when it comes to their lower end offerings.

What didnt you like about the carvin B800? Was it the tone? I am just curious cause i was going to buy one w/o hearing it, but they are backordered so i bought a GK BL600 and love it.
GK 700 RB II from RMC. $499 delivered. You'll still be playing it long after that Carvin is a memory ...
I've played both, and I would take the Carvin in a flash. I have no idea what the current Carvin BX600 and BX1200 sound like, so I have no opinion on them, but I do know the B800 and the B1500. Just my $0.02. IMHO, and all that.
I recently bought a used Sansamp RBI preamp for 160.00 and a used QSC RMX850 for 200.00 for a back up rig because I'm in 2 bands and while it's not my SVT-CL it is a pretty killer sounding amp for 360.00. With my used Avatar 2x12 cab I paid 200.00 I've got a very gig worthy rig for under 600.00. I haven't played any SS amps in a while that have sounded as good to me as the rig I just got.
