6-string with soapbars (ie my Ibanez)

5-string fretless PJ

Backup to the 6-string

For me it would be an active 24 fret Jazz style with rounds, a Precision style bass with flats, and even though I don't use it much, a fretless Jazz style bass. I'm not naming brands and models, because people get hurt feelings if someone doesn't name their favorite brand.

I have yet to figure out what brand though on the Jazz and Precision.

Yes. Seriously. Just like I seriously believe, after playing double bass for 13 years, that a double bass and acoustic bass guitar are the one and the same instrument.

Whoa, that's very close to my answer! I don't have a MIDI pickup on my fretted though. The bands I play in switch tunings so often that multiple instruments are a necessity. If I could only have 3 basses I'd have to mod a 6-string fretted with Zon tuners or something.

My El Capitan 5-string fretless is my main practice instrument so I would hate to be without it. That would be #2 even though the gig I'm using it this month is also the first this year.

Upright bass is #3. Again don't use it much but certain gigs are impossible to do using anything else.

Bass 1) Fender American P or J. You can take your pick among the many models etc available; but, for many band leaders and other people you may work for, this is a standard. I would install a HipShot D-tuner and learn to use it.

Bass 2) Fretless; probably a Zon Sonus in some configuration, could be 4 or 5.

Bass 3) A "modern" 5 or 6 string. For me right now, this would be a Sadowsky 5 with either the WL configuration or a 24 fret neck. But, really, there are so many good options out there that many other cases could be made: Smith, A-C, Fodera, Nord, Spector, Roscoe, Alembic etc etc. Kind of depends here on preferences, budget, etc. I mean, if I win the lottery its a custom Alembic. But, I would still want the Sadowsky; so...

Interesting question; because a bass player should be able to cover a lot of ground with 3 basses. But, there are so many good choices with different things going on that are available now.

I'm OK with that, but the EBMM would have to be a Sterling 5 HS or HH, and the Jazz would have to have an S1 switch and Hipshot drop tuner...
