3 ways America should be more like Canada

I'm not OK with all universities as job training centers, but vocational/trade schools are a far better place for a lot of people than a college where they can learn to be a pencil-pusher when that's the last thing they're qualified for and the last thing they want to do, but mumsy and Fahthah told them they'd be a big disappointment if they didn't carry on the family tradition. I originally studied architecture, but after a few years, decided that I didn't want to be one. However, the school I attended gave me a helluva lot of useful information and tools to use in anything technical and I use this info every day. I went back for the same field at a UWisconsin school and, while it has a good reputation, my views don't align with theirs, so I stopped. Their architecture school teaches people how to draw pretty buildings, without much thought about what it will require to build them and I went to an engineering school.
I think it's a huge mistake for suburban high schools to abandon their tech classes, like carpentry, drafting, any electrical, metal-working, etc. My high school forced the drafting teacher into early retirement and the rest of the shop teachers quit on the spot, out of loyalty to him. The school gave up and sold off the equipment, which I would have loved to have- it was all great stuff. They didn't want to bother arguing with the parents of the students, who wanted Doctors, Lawyers and other executive-level children, even if the kids didn't fit those molds.

no argument here.....there has been a trend away from academia tho' and i'd like to think that at least some will pursue that......
when i was young they were fond of telling everyone that they should be focused on university,and a lot of folks wasted a lot of time and money before they realized that they would have to figure out how to earn a living
Canada is a good place to live.
But our social programs aren't free.......they have to be paid for somehow.......
I criticize and poke fun........but there are lots of fine Canadian people....
I'm wondering why 'Obamacare" is such a contentious issue in the states?......On American t.v docs they praise our medical system but then turn around and having nothing good to say about Obamacare.
If you want a medical system like ours....wouldn't you be chomping at the bit for Obama's plan?

that assumes that our system is better than it is.....let's recall how many doctors trained in canuckistan moved/fled to the states because they were not free to charge what they felt their services were worth....
.....you can also look at it as the "thin end of the wedge" ....once the man is paying the bills they tend to look for ways to cut costs,and limiting freedoms is often a byproduct of that....there are lots of things that people distrust about it,and after living thru 50 years of it here,i would certainly suggest they are right to ask the questions.....and our health care dollar has to support a bureaucracy that is mind boggling huge and full of idiots......

Private insurance is no better. They cut costs and waste money on bureaucracy just as well as any government.
Grass is always greener on the other side. People from Canada look down here and think our way is better. I look up there and think how much easier contract negotiations would be if we didn't have to spend 6 months negotiating health care costs. Would I be happier if I wasn't locked into this job because of the health care benefits and were free to move from job to job without worrying how my kids are going to see the doctor?
......my point is that before anyone starts thinking that it's the bees knees it would be wise to have a look under the hood....a real good look.....i was half asleep there....no, i doubt if private companies can find as many worthless paper shufflers,though the money goes to profit,and there are always pressures to cut costs to that end....

Obamacare is contentious because, while we need a good health care insurance/payment system, we don't need THAT one. In Fall, the rates and deductibles are going to increase and you're going to be ring side for a lot of fireworks.
Obama's plan forces people to enter a system that won't work, will force doctors to find new lines of work and the industry as a whole will decrease in quality. We have been losing hospitals because people can't/won't pay their bills and use the ER for headaches, stubbed toes and other extremely minor ailments and when the government tells them they won't receive full payment for services, they'll stop accepting Medicare recipients.
Obama's plan is NOTHING like yours. Trust me on that.
All due respect, there are no doctors who are going to be forced into other jobs. We are already short of doctors.
Also, the predictions about decreases in quality are just opinions, most coming from people who sit on the opposite side of the aisle. My in laws all work in healthcare, from physicians assistants, to executives, down the nurses, and none of them give any credibility to most of the media predictions. Some are for Obamacare, some are against, but they all agree that most of the talking heads and lay people you encounter are full of $$$$.
We won't really know whether the system is going to work for another six or seven years, and that's only if the other team doesn't win the presidency and the majority in Congress. Myself, I really don't understand how people can feel comfortable making all kinds of predictions about a system that most people know nothing about. Nothing funnier to me than going in my break room at work and listening to a guy who doesn't even understand his 401 K ramble on about health care.
He's slowly cracking. One of us told him to lighten up not far back & it's slowly but surely sinking in.
perhaps the concept is unclear so i'll explain it to you......when you spend a lot of time annoying adults,it is unlikely that they are going to be interested in conversing with you later simply because you feel like it...maybe mom can explain that too......and for the record,your humor ain't funny....now go away....
