3 ways America should be more like Canada

The main difference is in the pronunciation. I don't and have never known any of my Canuck buds to pronounce it al-lu-min-um. Same as con-tro-ver-sy opposed to con-tro-ver-sy. I have more of an issue with the British (Cdn.) lefttenant vs. the U.S. looey. Most Canadians get that right, but some don't (even newscasters) probably due to the majority of war movies we see here are from the states.

It was actually the British, but they had other wars going on so they used Canadian troupes.

Interestingly, the 1st war where the British used comedy troupes from another country other than their own to provide much needed comic relief.

I love the 'merican flag waving as much as anyone, but Canada's soldiers aren't wimps. According to Wikipedia, they took part in the Korean War, the gulf war, Kosovo War and the Afghan war. They've managed to have our backs when we needed it. Also, if Canada keeps its military low because America patrols the whole globe, then who's the fool there? IIRC, Britain reduced their Navy at one point because you couldn't swing a cat in the ocean without hitting a US vessel. Again, who's the fool?

Honestly, first time and since when I heard it as Al-lu-min-ium-I thought the person was just being a smarty-pants since I pronounce it the other way. I learned something on TB :bag:

First paragraph: I would like more training for people,"teach them to fish not just give them a fish". But not enough jobs. I feel bad for younger people (really anyone) hitting the job market.

Totally agree - had this conversation with someone yesterday, we each have a relative who is autistic but we know they are just brilliant at certain things.

I just heard an interesting take on the "Give a man a fish" deal- "Build a man a fire, he'll stay warm until it goes out. Light a man on fire, he'll stay warm for the rest of his life".

Re: hitting the job market- kids who have had one job or nothing that would give them usable skills before they graduate from college will be screwed. Also, people who didn't look into the jobs that were in-demand before entering college AND KEEP TRACK OF JOBS THAT ARE HIRING will also be screwed. I have to wonder what the guidance councilors are thinking when they churn out so many people with unmarketable degrees. People need to keep an open mind- get a decent job, even if it's outside of the degree and keep looking for something that's closer to the original field. If the first job turns out to be a good fit, stay there but don't just sit around, whining that they can't get a job.

That's the tricky thing about words with Latin origin- people who don't speak Latin don't know how to read, write, speak or read it and Americans have a tendency to buck authority, so the Colonists and first here in the US to rebel against the Crown made a point of changing the pronunciation of many words.

i don't know if i'm comfortable with the universities as pure,flat out job training centers tho'......
