300 Watts vs 200 Watts???

Trying to be sarcastic, which I guess didn't work. I really like the fender tonestack. Vintage bassman 100 is my amp of choice (although it seems to be the TH500 these days).

I think the fender tone stack gets a bad rap here on TB... no mids,, scooped sound,, too complicated, etc. Of course it seems fine when folks are blissfully unaware of how it is different from a Baxandall.
sorry man, did not read the sarcasm in your post. I agree with you that the Fender tone stack kinda gets a bad rap here on TB (at least in some circles) I was raised up on the Fender tone stack and am perfectly good with it. Of course, I am also familiar with the Ampeg/Bax stack as well, and can make that work too. They are all just tools of the trade.

No worries pfschim. Agree on your tools of the trade comment.

I think some of the discussion about quality and the PCBs and all that, is how will you use the amp and how long. Buy an amp where the tube sockets attach directly to a PCB, and it may be fine for 20 years or it may wear out way before that. Depends on how you use and abuse your amp. If you buy something like a Reeves, it will be fine for a lifetime, and take much abuse, and when the tube sockets wear out they will be able to be repaired, by any good tech.

Think about talkbass 40 years from now... in the year 2054 I have no problem seeing a Reeves in the FS. Will there be a Mills Atlas still rocking then?

ha, dude, I'm pretty sure I'm not going to make 98 years, but I totally appreciate the thought. ;)
You'll probably see it though.

As has already been mentioned, the difference in loudness between the two would be minimal. I would be more interested in the tonal differences and clean headroom. 6L6GC's and KT-88"s sound way different to my ears. Different sounding breakup when driven hard. What about output transformers? At the low selling price they advertise, that is usually the first component to be underspec'd because it is the most expensive single component. Cheap or too small output xformer equals diminished low frequency response. And finally, do both amps use the same tone stacks ?

I looked at the pics on facebook and listened to the clip posted here. I'm not at all impressed, sorry and I do not intend to insult the builder. I'm a hobby builder, and by no means an expert, just a hobbiest.

Some of the amps, especially the combo, look like they were built in HS shop class. There were no gut shots so I can't discuss that. Lead dress and layout are absolutely critical in a tube amp. A well designed PCB can hold up, be serviced, and sound every bit as good as PT P or tag board.

As for power, in theory you can get 300 watts from 8 6L6s, but it's not likely these are getting a true 300 watts. In class AB push pull the tube only conducts 1/4 of the time, so 2-30 watt tubes can produce up to 120 watts. In typical audio applications though, the max comes in about 60-70 watts due to inefficiency of the total circuit.

My biggest concern would be for the safety of these amps. UL has not evaluated them, and I doubt if they've been put through any real safety testing.

Auto corrected typo. Should have said 'made', now edited. Point to point is inherently worse as its the only build style that forces layout to be compromised to be built in that style. Layout is all of the art of making audio circuits. The circuits themselves are long established, quality components are jsut costs, laying it all out well is still a skill that needs to be applied. Also don't confuse gain and distortion.

Sorry, I must have read tidily wrong 15 times (I as in lid) which combined with mode made me misread it completely.

I am not mixing up gain with distortion. If a gain stage isn't overloaded there can be very high gain while remaining clean (usually pentode preamps). You are referring to lead dress for signal routing in the earliest stages to retain a low noise floor. It can be done with point to point, but I wouldn't like to mass produce it.

These amplifier designs probably do not have good PCB design (unless the are lifted straight off something else)

You realize of course that now I will be stalking your account everyday until I see a review...

That's fine haha you may be waiting a while though... Last I checked they had just finished the cabinet. I will talk to Frank today and see how long he thinks it will take. My only "complaint" (not really) so far is that they are based in central Florida, so that means shipping is a bit pricey. I remember when I worked for UPS anything going to or from central Florida was really expensive... no idea why.

I didn't know they were in Florida?? I live in Florida. Good news for me I guess.

It shows that they are paying attention anyway. It was the backdrop for the Facebook page until people started dissing it. I wonder if the quality of the workmanship will get better or just more hidden?
I remember when the builder for Scarlett Amps joined a thread three years ago. There were a handful lot people on TB that were really disrespectful and rude, arguing with basically everything he said. He left and hasn't been back since, and I don't blame him.

I'm not saying that you can't disagree with them when they come on, but some people can't tell the difference between their own opinion and a fact.

Over on Rig-Talk.com, which is a guitar-centric forum dedicated almost solely to guitar amps, they often talk about/make fun of this new builder named Billy Blades. Someone posted up a shot of an early amp the guy made, and one of the first replies was a question asking if the amp came with a fire extinguisher. Most everybody agreed that the wire job was a serious fire hazard.

Blades has put out some commercial amps, which have...cupholders built into them. I don't think he's selling many amps.
