Good job, Reverb.com. Because you know you'll need to file your envelopes.

Hello 3Leaf wonders, hope all is well. I've been using the Octavbre Mini for some time and really dig it, satisfies every octave need I have except for subs (enter the MXR Sub Machine), and stacks really well. Recently got lucky with a trade + cash for a Proton V3 and wanted to pick your collective brains.
I'm using passive axes with flats exclusively, so inherently the tone is a little dark and the output isn't terribly strong. I haven't tried putting a boost before the filter, but I am having a little trouble getting it trigger without really digging in. Anybody who run passive basses with the Proton have tips about getting a solid signal to trigger the filter? Boost is on my list, just haven't had to chance to mount it on my board yet.
Thanks!
I use a compressor before the envelope filter (and all the other effects, too), and it acts partially as a boost. I use passive basses that need a little extra “oomph” to make some things pop.
I'm a Jazz with TI Flats kind of guy who has paired an Octabvre Mini with a Wonderlove, a Microtron IV, and a Xerograph Deluxe. You need some upper order harmonics. Here are ways I do that:
1. If you're pairing a filter with the Mini, roll the tone knob up. My normal octave sound is tone fully ccw, but you can add some buzz in for the filter to grab with tone getting toward noon.
2. Add some dirt. This is the easiest thing to do. Filters love dirt. A little OD gives that classic funk sound, while fuzz gets Moogy.
3. Use your bridge pickup if you have one. Octavers tend to work best on the neck, and filters seem to like the brighter punch of the bridge. This is hard to balance if you have your Mini into your Proton with no dirt between, but again, the Mini's tone knob can help.
4. Pluck nearer the bridge with a bonier part of the finger. Hard to explain without a video, but going from the softer attack from the pads of my fingers to the tip really helps get some sharp attack the filter can grab.
Hope some of that helps.
@Eric Cioe ...
A lot of the points are counterintuitive (octave lokes neck, filter like bridge) but make total sense. Thank you for the tip re the Mini tone knob, def would not have considered that. Yep, I've run octave, fuzz, filter in that order for a while but may need an OD in there when I don't want to go full synthy with fuzz + filter. Thank you!
The tone knob on the mini took me some time to figure, but then I asked why I'm slavishly devoted to the OC-2 sound. It works for the Sledgehammer thing and the Nerve / Jojo Mayer thing, but it doesn't work with filters by itself. The flexibility a real bonus of the Octabvre, although I imagine most of us are pretty glued to the OC-2 side.
And yeah, some OD really helps the filter have something to grab. I've always used an MBD2 for this, but I imagine anything would work. The Fuzzrocious Lil Fella is affordable, comes in a practical size, and is tonally flexible. The MBD series is great and super flexible. But I think basically anything would work. If I were doing this but didn't care about top jacks (and I care very much about top jacks) and wanted a bargain, I'd probably use a TC Spark.
Thanks a lot for that!I'm a Jazz with TI Flats kind of guy who has paired an Octabvre Mini with a Wonderlove, a Microtron IV, and a Xerograph Deluxe. You need some upper order harmonics. Here are ways I do that:
