3Leaf Audio Club - Episode 2

I got to order the Octabvre and Proton when I purchased the Doom2.

You must have some fast fingers to snag all 3 pedals from this year. Wow...I'm 0/3!

That's only "fast fingers" to get the Doom 2 (and even could have been Auto Pay.... errr... Apple Pay in some cases), and is a fairly significant part of what caused most of the controversy with these drops. International customers that got a Doom 2 could bypass having to take part in a pedal drop, and effectively preorder the Proton and Octabvre just by saying they want one. Meanwhile, U.S. customers were subjected to having to have the fast fingers for the Proton, and/or forced to buy a bundle to get an Octabvre.

No offence directed at @Romain909 of course. Congratulations on landing the trinity, and I'm a bit jealous. :)

Spencer has long been complimented for making some of the best sounding bass pedals, but also long criticized for making poor business/customer service decisions.

Congrats to those of you who have gotten your pedals. They're obviously good/great pedals and I hope you enjoy playing them. I already made my statement regarding the last minute "tying" and poked some additional fun as well so I won't repeat them again but I will #NeverForget.

I think this is where more than a few of us have landed as well.

I'll add/echo one last point that @3toes made earlier as well though:
I can't find a single review or even demo of the preamp anywhere. It doesn't seem like anyone has one, which seems odd for "the best onboard bass preamplifier on the market."

Ftelettronica EF/TF - the big blue beast. This is a Meatball clone and I had an original Meatball at one point and wanted one again.

New to me, thanks to our favorite dirt and synth journalist, is a Chunk Agent 00Funk clone. This thing is a gooey, funk machine and may end up becoming my favorite for synth as it can be fat and juicy yet also get into very focused high end craziness. It's in the shop so I'm hoping a simple footswitch swap fixes it. No expression input however the sweep can be set slow enough to open the horizons.

I also had an XD and enjoyed the sound of the XD over the Chroma, which was the tamest of the 3. The XD's slow sweep is top shelf.

I owned a Barge Concepts Grinder for a bit (another Meatball clone) and still regret selling it almost 15 years later, so I've been curious about the FTtelletronica for a while now since it hit my radar. Thanks for the quick comparison to the Chromatron. Never owned that one, but it does help with my thoughts on the FTteletronica.

Curiosity: I may have missed the discussion, but which 00Funk clone are you talking about?

Pretty cool hearing these again. FTteletronica moves a few notches up the G.A.S. list. ha!
And for significantly less than a Chromatron.

---------------------------

Not specifically 3Leaf related, but here's a couple audio clips with the Grinder, comparing effects in the effects loop of my Grinder vs. before/after.

Electric Mistress and Echo Park were both in the FX loop.

Clip with the Keeley modded Sparkle Drive is a comparison of using the drive in various positions related to the Grinder.
1. Clean bass
2. Grinder
3. Keeley
4. Keeley in Grinder's FX Loop
5. Keeley > Grinder
6. Grinder > Keeley

99% of the time, that's the other way around.
No whining here, we're used to it. European markets never get the exclusive things the US market has. Pick any collectible you might think of : the US get it first, or have an exclusive version we 'll never have.

Look at Fenders. I purchased my first Ultra in February 2022. It came with a unlevelled fretboard. Unplayable. I asked for an exchange. I gave up in December 2022 when Fender CS replied there would not be any exchange before Summer 2023 because of a shortage of basses in Europe.
I eventually asked for a refund and found an other one... that had been ordered 12 months earlier.

In the meantime, the US market is flooded with brand new basses. Literally.
To be honest, I won't consider it massively unfair to see it's the other way around THIS TIME. Especially considering the fact that we're talking about 10/15% of international orders.

Speaking for myself, this choice was more of an eyebrow raise: the core of the issue was the tied preamps and the communication surrounding them. But who am I to disagree with the member who founded this thread ;)

lol yep, first time I felt it was truly deserved though

That sucks. I'm sorry you had that experience. I'm not a Fender guy, but I do love to play Warwicks. Maybe you and I should switch places for ease of customer service haha

Han Solo in Stormtrooper armour. Available only with tokens from Froot Loops. We don’t even get Froot Loops here. I’m over it. Honest.

Well, I certainly apologize and didn't mean to come off as an "entitled American." I was surprised because I've never seen a messy release like this. (But I also don't dive into the collectibles, or European markets much.) I guess it just didn't make sense to not have the same system for everyone.

I definitely agree that the main issue was the forced bundles, and Spencer really smacking his customers in the face. Given said behavior, there IS a part of me that wishes someone else had started this thread! :)

That's because the Doom 2 isn't so much a fuzz as a synth pedal. If you want it for fuzz... sure, there are more classic options and their variants; but I haven't found another fuzz that so well emulates an oscillator when placed after a suboctave and before a filter.

I like to think I have an open mind so I would love to hear a sound clip of what you are talking about otherwise agree to disagree. Many other dirt pedals go better w octave and filters.

Doom2 is not an oscillator…it’s a fuzz. It’s billed as a fuzz that gets close to a sawtooth wave which is really all about how it clips. Harder clips more resemble a square wave. It’s a custom circuit so what you like in a circuit might be everything that this circuit does, but for me, it’s fairly unimpressive and at the prices it is trading hands…we’ll, let’s
just say the emperor certainly has some new clothes.

Regarding filters and fuzz in general…I challenge you to place almost any fuzz before a good filter like a Moog MF101 or an IE XD tell me it doesn’t sound like as juicy of an oscillator as the Doom does as you sweep the fuzz.

No new pedal but here’s something new to this thread.
You’ve seen my large studio board gDESS HPB 720OL), meet the stage/rehearsal light board, Dess’ HPBM (except mine will have black power supply and patchbay).

It should carry :
-a strobostomp tuner,
-an Empress Effect bass Comp,
-the Proton I’ve just received
-a Broughton Messenger Preamp/DI.

If it doesn’t have enough fatness, I might swap the Proton for a DCX.
The other one is too heavy/expensive to be carried around too much ahaha

I don't think this is about sound clips. It sounds like you've played the Doom 2 and if it's not for you, I don't see how a sound clip will change that. Nor should it! As I wrote in a post (#7408) from earlier the same day as the one you quote in this reply: "pedals are subjective." If its sound isn't your thing, then it's not for you and that's okay :) Plus there are Doom 2 sound examples all over the internet: Zach Rizer's demo is a good place to start. If that doesn't sound like the synth tone you've been looking for, we can indeed agree to disagree.

But I think you've misunderstood what I was saying: I'm not claiming the Doom 2 is an actual oscillator (that would be silly--those are found in synthesizers, not dirt pedals) and I understand it is billed as an "original fuzz circuit." I am saying that--to my ears--it emulates an oscillator better than other fuzz pedals. When bass players do the whole suboctave --> fuzz --> filter thing to produce synth tones, it's the fuzz that is mimicking the oscillator function in a synthesizer by simulating a sawtooth or square waveform (a sample rate reducer also works for more industrial synth tones). You originally wrote that "there are so many better fuzzes out there." My point was that the Doom 2 is not a traditional fuzz circuit and it isn't going to get you those classic fuzz tones so lumping it in with them is not really leaning into where it shines. If I was unclear about any of this, I apologize.

Thankfully I've already done your challenge. In fact, I've spent a large part of the past three-and-a-half years exploring how best to emulate low-gain bass synthesis via pedals. I've owned everything from the Source Audio C4 to Brassmasters like the Iron Ether Oxide, Broughton Maestro, and Hiero BEAD v3. I do use an Iron Ether Xerograph Deluxe so I've met your good filter benchmark (and I obviously agree with it!). The Doom 2 is what has repeatedly won in my dirt-that-produces-synth-tone shootouts. It's not the only pedal I'll ever run into the XD--I frequently use the Iron Ether FMeron and Iron Ether FrantaBit as well--but it is the pedal I come back to time after time for this purpose. So yes, it is without hesitation and on the basis of scores of trials that I can tell you no other fuzz sounds "like as juicy of an oscillator as the Doom does as [one] sweeps the fuzz."

Once again: if you prefer something else, there's no right or wrong here. That's what's so fun about pedals. What's "juicy" to me can be anemic to you. The XD will make any dirt sound synthy when swept with an expression pedal so this comes down to some fairly fine nuances. All my previous reply intended to say was that treating the Doom 2 like any other fuzz (your original post said nothing about synth tones) is of course going to disappoint someone looking for a muff sound or some other vintage fuzz tone.

Edit: thinking about this further, I think it's very clear you and I are looking for a different sound because you mention wanting to try the HGM version since the standard didn't do it for you. I had both the standard and the HGM and I decided to keep the standard *shrug*

Oooo, tell me more about the Ants In My Eyes Johnson pedal. :p
It's a nice Mammoth fuzz clone from GojiraFX in Scotland. It has the most confusing control layout on any pedal I have: all controls are labelled Ants. It's no Doom 2 but it's better than any pedal with that graphic has a right to be.

The Cornholio pedal is wild though, as per Gojira (and with apologies on the 3 Leaf thread (I'll listen to @mouthmw and try to post 3 Leaf pedal pictures later)):

"The Noise Ensemble Fuzz uses and severally abuses the PT2399 delay chip. Giving a wide range of fuzz tones and modulation that ranges from reverb/delay to chorus/flange/pitchshifting and vibrato effects… The longer the delay the weirder the modulation..

It also oscillates! and its wild! Turn on the feedback loop for some crazy winding, ascending oscillation, pitch is controlled with the ensemble knob."

Well, that's Ants In My Eyes Johnson for ya... he can't see anything at all because his eyes are full of ants.
