4001 Mashup

Great discussion everyone!

The dye was just delivered.

That's quite the box for a little vial of dye.

I'll see about mixing up some samples tomorrow, and testing them on some scrap maple.

Oh, and in other news, the Yes Phoenix 2014 show on BluRay shipped. I should have that in the next few days.

*edited to add - I just ordered the DVD/CD set as well, and since it's "Amazon Auto Rip", I downloaded it and am listening to it right now. I can hear myself screaming in the audience :p

Also ordered the 7 CD set from the '73 live shows. Somebody stop me!

edited again to add - even the MP3 version has excellent sound quality. Looking forward to the BluRay!

Yes, and I sort of struck out with finding any kind of white dye. There's white wash, but I'm not sure how well the pink would play with that. I could not find any kind of matching pink and white dyes, or trans paint, and at this stage, I don't think I want to experiment. So I'm tending toward some kind of solid/trans. Either pink, or natural.

A lot of the builders I've seen who work with dyes use the "apply and sand back" method.

This makes achieving a burst pretty controllable.

You could do pinkburst with the pigment mixed in varying intensities and just use the maple as the "white" field.

Strategic staining like in the vid is pretty tricky but if you can stay relaxed and patient you will learn how to develop it successfully. A willingness to experiment helps too. Sometimes you'll end up with something unpredictable but better than what you were initially going for. (sometimes not) It's sorts' like water-colour compared to oil or acrylic painting - it's more about going with the flow of the materials and developing a loose control of all the steps - as in, the wood being thoroughly prepared 1st and working step by step w/the appropriate time for drying between. It's a commitment once you start as it's in the wood fibers never to be sanded out. WCS, at the end of it if it's not the way you wanted it to turn out - you can always paint it a solid colour. ;)

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone.

The good news is that the dye does not penetrate very deeply, and can be easily sanded off.

I'll see how it looks once it dries. Right now, I'm thinking this is about equivalent to a biblical abomination. The tricky part is that any seam where the glue squeezed out during clamping and drying does not take the stain very well.

In the video I posted, he mentions your glue issue specifically in his prep comments.

By the way, I really like how that body turned out.

Yes, I just finished watching the video. While I was sanding, there were a few times I thought I was done, but then noticed the glue, and went back to 120 grit to take it down. I really need to get some naphtha as that shows the left over glue more clearly. I'll play with this a bit more I think - it may not be a total disaster. I can sand out a lot of the color, and then re-apply. I may be able to do a "poor-man's" burst after all.

Regarding the body, thanks! I also am very pleased with it. I rounded over the key spots for comfort - belly cut, arm rest, and even a bit on the bottom where it'll hit your leg while sitting. It's quite comfy. I also love the symmetry unlike the original design. With the body modified like this, along with the modified headstock, I'm thinking it's far away enough from an actual Ric to not infringe on their trademark.

As a design, it's as close to a RIC as the Guild Pilot is to a Fender Jazz.

There are a lot of basses on the market with influences from RIC designs...the Schecter Stargazer is the first that comes to mind.

I think even the headstock is OK, especially because it's a fiver.

RIC's filed design trademarks are VERY specific and include the entire instrument.

Unless you show up at a trade show with a few dozen of these and start incorporating similar bridge, pickguard, and truss rod cover shapes, I think you're in the clear.

Looking again at it, I think it's starting to grow on me. I may start to do this in sections, instead of all at once - top, back then sides. I tend to rush things as I get closer to completion. I'm going to try and avoid that on this build.

Thanks for all the encouragement!

I tried sanding it back a bit.

I focused on the areas where there appeared to be some leftover glue.

Then I applied another coat.

I'm thinking Ill be doing this several more times. It's showing up on my screen a little more orange than it actually is, but the color is definitely a pink.

I'll let this dry completely, likely overnight, and play with it over the next few days. I still haven't decided what I'll finish it with - lacquer, shellac, that water based varathane the pros have been talking about over the last few months...

In any event, if I end up not liking it, I still think I'll be able to sand it off completely, or just shoot it with white.

That looks awesome, I'd rock that bass :)
