I usually do that with all rattle cans before I use them. Seems to really make a difference when using the nitro metallic colors from ReRanch or Gracey's.

Not sure if it's common knowledge but I had a much easier time spraying that exact stuff after setting the cans in hot water for about 10 mins. It made a huge difference in terms of a consistent mix and spray pattern.

At some point, you have to say "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore". Either that, or "I think this is as done as it's ever going to be". You know, "Close enough for government work" or some such.

Anyway, I've futzed with this long enough. I'll let it dry, which in this heat should be about 5 minutes, and then tomorrow or Saturday, I'll start spraying the clear. And pray to the bass goddesses that the water based clear coat doesn't somehow mix with the aniline dye and make it run or something. Though granted, that might be a pretty cool effect.

I left one can of the clear out in the garage. By tomorrow, it should be about 120 degrees.

OK, just got my delivery from Amazon. I'll be re-living my last Yes concert and looking for myself in the audience shots

My first take was a nuclear mushroom cloud on the right hand cover.... Yes must have blown up Mesa real good!

I sprayed it inside with the garage door and other doors open but I wore a very good mask as well. I'm sure it's not the absolute safest way to do it so use your best judgement but it worked for me. I did notice that the concrete floor of my garage where I was spraying became a little slick but it didn't last long.

Also, that finish didn't have any effect on the dried dye for me.

OK, got the first coat of clear on.

I have the garage door open at the bottom and the back door wide open. While it's not as bad as lacquer, it still smells pretty bad. Per the can instructions, I'll wait at least an hour and apply more coats as needed.

I may just let this cure overnight, hit it lightly with some 600 grit, and lay on a few more coats tomorrow.

It seems to be taking on an orange shade which I'm not too happy about. I'm wearing a pink top which I'm comparing it to.

Yeah, perhaps. I used the hot tap water. Perhaps it is too hot.

OK, this is vexing.

The bottom piece is the test of the dye I did. That's pink. The bass is now orange. It's not even a little pink. I don't want an orange bass. Anyone have any white paint?

I assumed a water based product would stay clear and not amber the pink… but that looks like what occurred. It's now salmon which is in the pink family.
