4001 Mashup

Thanks!

We were out and about and passed by a Harbor Freight, so we stopped by and bought a few things.

The multimeter was free! And I'm hoping I'll be able to get a nice gloss with that polisher. I had a 20% off coupon, so it wasn't a big investment. And I never have enough clamps. And we saw this crazy vehicle and I had to take a picture. I would totally rock that driving down the street. I bet it could pull my Ampeg SVT 810e in a trailer...

Hey Mapleglo

Wow, ch ch ch changes....

Sometimes the bass just takes over and takes you where IT wants to go.

As you know, I was a big fan and lobbied hard for the Fender pink, you know, the light pink as opposed to the more hot pink you were focusing on here.

Truth be told, I LOVE they way this turned out. That salmon color is absolutely killer. The universe works in mysterious ways. I am really stoked for you. This is one incredible bass for sure! Nice work, and once again, your hard work, dedication and craftsmanship are paying off BIG TIME!

Can't wait to hear it strung up and barkin'....

Thanks Rick! The salmon is really growing on me. And I agree about the universe. That said, looking over the bass, it appears I sanded through in a few places, so I started putting on a few more coats of clear. I'll add a few more tomorrow, and then start wet sanding again, maybe as soon as tomorrow night or Monday.

And what's even more weird, is that after wet sanding to 800 grit, it's now shading back to pink.

The sand paper, water, and wipe rags are all turning pink as I work. What is going on?!?!?!

That happened on my last build. The first two times I did the finish it was like it never dried even though it was a couple weeks between the last clear coat and the sanding. The third refinish worked though and it came out OK. I asked on here and nobody really could explain it. Baffles me as it's the only time it's ever happened on any refinish.

Thanks for all the comments and interest!

Put on another coat this morning. Maybe 2 or 3 more in a bit.

You know, since Chris Squire passed, I've been listening to Yes music and Chris Squire music exclusively. I like to think that perhaps as his spirit was going out into the universe, he saw me building this bass, and maybe gave me the thumbs up. Since his nick name was "The Fish", he made the bass salmon, as kind of a reminder. Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking with it.

Started wet sanding.

Still have to get the edges there. I'm trying not to sand through again.

Strange things are happening. It's cloudy.

And the pink is reappearing in sections.

These are not sanded through areas, as far as I can tell. It feels like there's clear coat there. Perhaps the clear doesn't like the dye? Perhaps there's too much humidity? Perhaps the ghost of Squire past is rebelling against the pink? Or the Salmon? Or the most likely, I have no idea what I'm doing :p

I started thinking about how much work it would be to sand it back down to the maple, and do the tung oil thing. The fret board will be a nightmare though...

Edited to add - I am definitely sanding through somehow. I just washed off pink dye from my hands. *sigh*

Not too much I can say, unfortunately. The joys of painting instruments. You didn't have enough clear on there to cover the roughness of the color coats. You sanded through the clear into the color. And transparent shaded color schemes are very difficult to touch up. Not much real choice other than to sand it back and do the color coats over again. Hopefully, you can mask off the fingerboard and not have to redo that. That's a pretty color scheme.

Don't feel too bad; I just did a similar thing last night on a vintage Ampeg restoration. I got the black/red sunburst on the body just right, but it was a little too rough. I thought 8 coats of clear was enough. Then I tried to sand it down to flatten it.....and went through in a few spots. Aaargh. I've got to sand it all back and redo almost the whole body. Hours and days lost. And the customer is calling me every few days wondering if it's done yet......

One of the best features of the water-based Varathane that I'm using these days (see the other thread) is that it all sprays on and drys very quickly. The total cycle for a gloss sunburst finish can be as short as 4 days.
