4001 Mashup

OK, $56.00 later. Let's try this one more time...

Sanded down the fret markers flat this morning. I think I'll leave the neck clamped up, sandwiched between the angle iron another day. I probably don't have to, but now I'm worried about the warp.

I'm really enjoying the maple/walnut combination. Even more, I think, than maple/mahogany.

Oh, and the knot in the fret board, just below the 21st fret is clearly visible in this shot. Looks like I just missed it. I think it'll be ok.

Well, since I'm leaving the neck clamped up for another day, and I had some slightly warped maple hanging around destined for the bon fire, I figured I'd use that time and wood to build a base for the fret press.

There is no stopping the Nexy! :bassist:

The neck has been liberated from the clamps.

I did a little sanding, but it's just too hot in the workshop. Once it hits 120 in there, the a/c just can't bring the temps down. So I sanded for a little while, and then called it quits. For this type of work, I have to start in the morning while it's still cool enough for the a/c to keep up.

As an aside, I ordered this from eBay.

It's changer for a pedal steel guitar. For those not in the know, this is the device that acts as a bridge, and the mechanism to change the pitch of the strings. A friend of mine was talking about selling her pedal steel, and it got my mind to thinking. I've always wanted to play the pedal steel, but the prices were a bit prohibitive. So when I saw this at a reasonable price, I jumped on it and won the auction. I'll start collecting some parts, and see how far I can take it. I never saw a pedal steel up close, and have absolutely no experience with them, but have been doing some research. I think it may be doable for a reasonable price. If it starts to happen, I'll probably start a build thread for it.

Come on Maple, you need to build a Bass Pedal Steel. It's been done, there are a few out there. You'll be way cooler than all those mere fretless bass players.

And here I was thinking you were kidding:

It's actually pretty cool.

I think I'll try starting a regular pedal steel, and if I can make it work, perhaps try a bass pedal steel.

In any event, I am sanding like a mad woman, but I can only work for about a half hour in the afternoon. The garage heats up all day - today it was like 113 degrees, so it's likely close to 120 in there by the time I get home. That wall unit A/C just doesn't have the power to cool it down. I did manage to finish the fret press.
