4x8 vertical in-line cab. Good idea?

The challenge here is the drivers - the concept of vertical stacking is well established; it's getting 8 inch drivers with the appropriate parameters for bass guitar that's the challenge. If you're going to make these by the thousands, you call up Eminence, tell them what you want, and you'll probably get it - It's not impossible, it';s just not done very often.

My searches for 8 inch drivers for bass guitar haven't been so fruitful - I have looked, and you end up either with not enough low end, or very low sensitivity.

I really have become a RevSound evangelist. Check out the RS28 and search here a little for what people have to say about those little MAGIC cabinets.
I have one of his 410 vertical cabs and it's unstoppable.

That was Basscooker, of Chopshop amps. He posted about it in the Janky-A Rigs of Doom thread, and he answered some of my questions with a detailed description via PM. He seemed like a nice guy.

The drivers in the RS28 have an Xmax of 2 mm - that's really guitar speaker territory, not bass guitar. That short throw, coupled with being 8 inch drivers, means they can't put out much low end.

There in lies the "magic". I don't claim do even have basic knowledge of driver dynamics or capabilities. Give him a call and maybe he can put your doubts to rest. Sometimes, just sometimes, the numbers lie.

I do have knowledge of drivers, and what Thiele Small parameters mean. There's no magic there. They might sound good - up to a point. Past that, they will fart and snort. If you like that, great. I want to move some air without so much of the farting and snorting.

Yes, drivers seem to be the limiting factor. Many of them would leave me displacement limited. Part of the 8" dream is to have smoother mids and highs from the smaller driver compared to the traditional 10" speakers. Unfortunately it seems like the choices are limited in the smaller sizes where there are many good choices in 10", both in raw drivers and in finished 2x10 cabs that can be stacked on end.

Vertical is a great idea.

Youll get alot farther with basic well known 10" and 12" speakers that have higher sensitivity and designed for bass use.

Your proposed 12" by 40" ratio for the cab could be slightly improved. Visually not a very desirable ratio and likewise could impose stability issues.

+1 These Trace cabs use Faital Pro drivers, and really sound great.

I was thinking about something similar (four 1x8 boxes that could be stacked), and came across these: "Visaton BG20-8 8" Full-Range Speaker with Whizzer Cone 8 Ohm" from www.parts-express.com!

Sensitivity is only 92 dB and Xlim is only 2 mm. Low frequency power handling might be displacement limited, but the OP did say "small amp." But Fs at 38 Hz looks good, and F3 68 Hz in a reasonable size sealed box seems like it would give bottom-octave response similar to an Ampeg 8x10 (which doesn't exactly have subbasement lows, but sounds really good).
