No one played the bass like him, he gave the instrument as much new territory as any other innovator out there. I'm so bummed he's gone, one of my old friends was going to do some work with Marc Sandman after he came back from Italy, Marc died on stage and never came back :scowl:

Wow, I'm not sure I could name 5 favorites... I mean, there are plenty of players I like a lot, who I think are really good, whose works I actively seek out & enjoy, some of whom I consider very influential in my own development as a bassist...and yet it seems strangely disingenuous to list them (or most of them at least) as my "favorites".
That probably says a lot more about how I listen to music these days than it does about my appreciation for these bassists though!
Um...I guess Tony Levin, Mick Karn, Chris Squire... yeah, none of the other guys I might want to mention feel right on my list. Weird, huh?

I'd have a hard time naming my favorite 5 bassists in any one genre and overall there's easily 100 bassists whose playing I really dig and have taken something from. But if I'm listing the 5 guys that have influenced me the most and whose playing is closest to my ideal for what a bass player should be the list would be:
