5 micros

Munji,

Also, this is a perhaps a dumb question, but I've seen a few people using JimmyM's avatar ( I've just associated it with Jimmy for so long). Is this some sign of solidarity for something? Curious about it is all.

Yes, the Jimmy avatar is in solidarity, even though we hate each other.

It's a love/hate relationship thing...;)

Pickles,
I haven't tried the F1 or F500. I've had a couple LMII's and a LMIII. Unfortunately, there isn't a large variety of amps to try here in the midwest. Since the local GC crushed all the smaller music stores in the area we only have what GC has (at least to demo). The local GC seems to prefer lowend versions of: squires, ibanez, schectors, acoustic amplification, and GK.

What's your take on the F!/F500 compared to the 5 micros Munji posted?

Munji, when you said AG500 you were talking about the TH500 right?

I agree with you that most of it boils down to subjectivity of taste. For my dough I like something simple and built like a tank.

That's why I may lean towards the TH500. I also really like the sonic footprint of my DB750 and I hear the TH500 comes close in that department.

I had one of those Eden's I think the model was a WTX 260. Not a bad sound. Kind of tube-like but sounded compressed somehow, not open and breathy. It was also pretty weak and would clip out trying to drive my D10BXD cab for gigs so I parted with it.

Perhaps it's not an even comparison with the MB800 having more watts listed, but can you tell which one in the group you have there seems to have the most raw power and headroom? Still subjective I know, but it's always good to hear opinions.

Although I miss the sparkly eyed redneck avatar, I'm chuckling that you have Devo Jimmy :) It's like snatching the other team's mascot :)
Well done!

You are correct, sir. I sold my AG500 (it was fine, but too heavy). If I were going for the DB750 sound, I'd go with the RH750. It's built like a tank (except for the knobs).

When Jimmy comes back from the nether world, I will revert to my avatar.

I also had the AG500, but it was kind of heavy given it's power. It was an interesting head, but I preferred my DB750 so I sold off my AG500. There is something completely addictive about the DB750's headroom and raw power.

You should keep the Avatar and have Jimmy find a new one :)

I was curious about munji's take, since I have not heard the others. I have tried an Aguilar ag500, which the f1 smokes. F1 has an amazing crisp yet textured tone.

... which is why the DB750 is the only heavy amp I kept.

In order of my favored tone profile:

1. MB800
2. Shuttle 9.0 and WTX-500 (tie)
4. TH500
5. RH750

Since synergy is usually a major factor in the tone of a rig -- which cabs do you prefer with which heads (especially, the MB800)?

[I'm ogling the forth-coming MB800 Fusion as a possible alternative to the Genz ShuttleMax 9.2 which is currently at the top of my head GAS list.]

The S9.0 and MB800 work well with any of my AE cabs (210, 212, 410). The RH750 needs 10s - I had a real tough time getting tones I like out of the AE212 with it. The WTX-500 works well with either, but seems to like 10s best.

Temper all this with my preference for 10s in the first place.

If you're looking for an alternative to the SM 9.2, you definitely should check out the Carvin BX500. I can't believe how much I love it and my main amp is the 9.2.

Well, I'm partial to 10s, so I like them all best with my AE410 or even my AE210, which is a phenomenal cab in its own right. I'd say the MB800 will sound great with the AE212, although I haven't tried it yet. I say this because mt Shuttle 9.0 sounds excellent through the AE212, and it's close in sound to the MB800.

I don't have the exposure to as many different cabs that you do, but I prefer 10's based on my experience to this point.

I like a tight, solid low bass with plenty of punch.

My EA CX-310 is a bit tighter than the HT322 I used to own.
Both are plenty punchy with the right amplification.

I'd love to compare an AE112b + AE210b stack to a pair of the AE210b (or the new HD series, though it would be nice to save the weight) -- it's a shame JimB stopped making the AE's.

I think I would need the BX1500 as I'm seldom in the PA mains unless we're playing a festival and I'd rather have an amp that I don't have to push hard to get a fair bit of SPL.

I do think that the Genz SMax 9.2 would work for me though (also possibly the forthcoming GK MB800 Fusion).

Footnote: my current cab is 8ohm as well, which doesn't help with moderately-powered heads. When I was using my EA iAmp-600 I had it REALLY jacked-up (just about maxed out) on some of our gigs.
