Actually, I didn't realize that these existed Lisa. Looks like a much more elegant and practical solution than mixing up powder and epoxy. Luminlay has them in blue too....

As far as how many magnets will hold it, it depends on the strength of the magnets. The ones I put on this bass are really strong and I don't think there's any way this cover will fall off. It's actually kind of hard to take the cover off because I put too many magnets. It sounds like for your idea, you would need the middle magnet to be stronger than the ones holding it on, so you might want less, but at the same time, they need to be able to hold it on still.

But have you though about this... what if that larger magnet magnetizes to your belt or the button on your pants or something while you're holding the bass?

That's a great observation that I hadn't considered. I think doing a design similar to your would also eliminate the need to tune the forces between the center/outer magnets so that I could pull the top off. I hope you don't mind me stealing it, and well done on the inlay too!

Hey Lisa

Sorry to keep bringing it up but Luminlay out of Japan actually has dots made for pro applications and they are white but light up turquoise/aqua. They are pretty cool and only around $20 bucks. They also sell a high powered LED flashlight for seven bucks that you can use anywhere to charge up the dots when you need to use them. Thought it might make sense on this build since the color is right.

I decided to go with them on three builds, they sell em on ebay, just search on luminlay.

They also make glow in the dark knobs and lines for lined fretless basses,

I am using these now as well- the blue ones are brighter than the green ones. Only thing for build sequence logistics is that shipping takes a couple weeks at least so you need to order well ahead of time.

Yeah, I loved the price on the ones from Philadelphia Luthiers, but with turquoise stone fretboard inlays the green would have clashed. A little more expensive but worth 20 bucks to have them in blue.

Interesting - I read that the green Luminlays were considered brighter, but I needed blue.

I completely understand, just funny to me seeing something so obscure that I own being mentioned here. They have great prices on everything when you compare them to a certain other major luthier supplier, although not as extensive an inventory.

Yeah, I love Philadelphia Luthiers - I always check there first. Have gotten quite a pile of stuff from them, never had a problem. A plus is being in New York shipping is quick!

I did some checking with the guys in Japan before I started ordering them. Evidently the greens are initially brighter after a fast charge, but the blues are brighter for a longer duration of time. I'm thinking of ways to mount a UV penlight to the back of the headstock…hmmmm…..:D

Very cool, Lonnybass - I use LED's in my Roscoes and my Rob Allen, but I get sick of the battery thing....

I live about 20 minutes from their HQ, and went by to pick up an order a few months ago. The owner was really nice, and gave me good advice, and some freebies for extras and testing.
