5 string fretless showcase: Habanero V

Push: it is true mahogany. I've used the other stuff, the kind that's farmed in south america (forget the name) it doesn't shimmer like this stuff. So pretty. Body will be about 1.5", and I'm using epoxy simply because I prefer to. I've had delams and shifts with every flavor of titebond, and I can't stand the bubbly mess that PU glues make. If System Three T-88 is good enough to build airplanes out of, it's good enough for me.

Neck blank done:
Made a tapered routing template for the neck:
Finished up the second maple lam:
Made a decision on the cocobolo top:
glued it up:

Putting the back maple lam on, I snapped a cell phone pic of the mahogany under epoxy:
Sooo pretty. I have enough mahogany to make at least three more bodies, I don't think I'm going to cover it up on future builds. The chatoyance is crazy. I got this piece by way of an estate sale, it's like 50 years old.
You're using the epoxy as a pore filler?

Why don't you use regular wood glue like Titebond for this application (of putting the lam on top of the mahogany)? And how thick will this lam be?
As explained further back in the thread, I don't like titebond or PU glues. The maple lams are about 3/16" (I'm not in the basement to measure precisely) and the total body thickness will be 1 1/2".

No prob, I like your work too. You were building your first bass while I was building my last one, I enjoyed that thread and I look forward to seeing more of your work!
Thank you. I am currently designing my second bass. But I have no shop anymore (used an empty bedroom for the first one, where my daughter sleeps right now
). So my second build will actually be a shop :scowl:. I planned to take half of the garage and isolate it. Install heating and a nice working bench.

I know how it is. I've moved twice since my last build, the place we are in now is kind of out in the country, where you get more for your money as far as rent...my son has his own bedroom and playroom, my wife has an office (who am I kidding, it's really all her house) and I get a workshop AND a mancave in the basement. Life is good, especially when I have space dedicated to the ruination of perfectly good lumber!!!

Bandsawed the body sandwich to 1/4" outside the final profile:
I really like this top, and the body size. It's barely two inches wider than my last habanero shape, but it feels nice. Next I have to rout the pocket, pickup pocket, electronics cavity, then glue up the back piece of cocobolo. It will get a 1/2" roundover front and back, with a nice wide hip cutaway.
