5-string P basses?

My friend has a recent Fender P 5 string. He's a legit Fender expert (really knows his stuff...), I need to see it, he said it has a soapbar type pup at the bridge, -he tells me it's very cool and that I need to buy it from him, he's probably right on both accounts.

The only two things I can get off the top of my head are Lull and Sadowsky. I know they are both quality basses, but both out of your range. A used Lull would probably run you about 800$ or a little more if your lucky. Sadowsky is above that.

Doesn't Fender make the P Bass Delux in a 5er? That would probably be a good choice, with the extra versatility of the bridge Pup. You'd still have to find a used one for anything near your price range. New they're around 1,200$.

Off topic, but KYJazzy, I'm gonna be in Louisville this weekend checking out some stuff. You ever make it over to Guitar Emporium on Bardstown Road?

Sounds like an American Precision Deluxe. Nice bass... somewhere in the ballpark of $1,300 new. I think.

Yamaha BB415 or BB615.The BB415 is passive and the BB615 is active. They don't sound just like Fenders but are great basses. The 415 is about $450 and the 615 $500.
Moderately priced 5-string P-basses are few and far between but the Yammies are your absolute best bet for the price. Fantastic basses for the money!

Send a PM to "Ancient Mariner" -- he bought mine and he digs it like cooked food!

The more I hear about the Yamaha, the more they call to me. I have really neglected those BB basses, mainly because there isn't anywhere around here that carries them for me to give em a good test run. But I've heard nothing but good things. Plus if they sound anything like that Stefano guy plays his BB MA sig, I'm sold ! (of course his tone is made up of practice, technique and talent) But would a yamaha quench my thirst for a solid P bass?

SnakeAnthony - Guitar Emporium is certainly the place to be in Louisville. I go in there to noodle on things I can't afford now and then. Right now I'm in Lexington though for school - if you ever find yourself in Lex, check out Willcutt Guitar Shoppe - it seriously beats GE. And that's no understatement, I love this store. Tons of basses and variety. (Now if only they carried Yammies...)

Whats good in Bowling Green? my grandparents live there so if there's a store I wanna know about it, there's nothing to do at my grandparents anyway :p

:hyper: +1 and then some! My BB415 with D'Addario flats gets a ton more playing time than my G&L L2500 (with half-rounds) and my Peavey Cirrus 5 USA (Peavey round-wounds). That tone is "right there" for me - I've recorded with it and gigged with it - and the G&L and Peavey are nowadays spending a lot of time sleeping in their cases!

Fender Japan makes a 5-string P that is strictly a P-bass (meaning: only a reg. P pickup & no bridge pickup). It's sortof a signature model for the bass player in a Japanese electro-punk band, but I forget the name offhand. I've been digging around for the info, but no luck yet so I'll post it when I find it. IIRC it was in your price range too. I did post a pic of it in another thread a week or two back so I'll see if I can find it and re-post it....

Oh, also check into the G&L L-5500. It's basically their take on a 5-string P-bass. There was a sunburst/rosewood one for sale over on The Dude Pit very recently.

That's the "Big Block" Fender P bass.

it's not really a P bass in my book. I've never played nor heard one, but a soapbar-type pickup near the bridge position doesn't really seem to P-like to me...

Celinder! :hyper:
This bass KILLS
